I call it the X offense

Mix-------Pirlo \ /
----Lampard-- \ /
------Poku--- /\
ST----------Villa / \

Just kidding. Still no width, hard to fit Lampard, , Mix, Poku and Pirlo on the same team

Edit: those slashes were supposed to be an x

Agreed with Kjbert. It's awkward to fit those four into most formations, but if you give Mix the clear directive to protect the midfield, I think the 4-3-3 will work fine and really give our attack some life a la Portland.

We won't be exactly the same, because Portland plays two attacking mids underneath their striker, and we'll have an extra deep lying playmaker in Pirlo instead, but at least all our best players are on the field.

Not only that, but Villa can't play Striker by himself.

I would rather see him play wide left. But there is an argument to be made, because of how he floats anyway, that HE is best served as a secondary striker or CAM at this stage of his career. Maybe we see that in 2017 when Lampard (and presumably Mix) are no longer here.

These are players that either are former MLS players who were sold for profit or USMNT players. Their current club is listed next to them. Together they make up what is called the player allocation list. All of these players are subjected the player allocation order. The order re-sets after the season, worst to best. For example, Chicago is now #1 team on this order. They have first dibbs to sign any of these players. If say, NYCFC wants Freddy Montero, they would have to either convince Chicago, Colorado and whoever else is above them in the order to either not sign him or trade them something to sign them.

Here's our explanation on George John: http://www.empireofsoccer.com/george-officially-member-42984/

We held his rights, but never actually signed a contract with him. Instead, we gave him free housing and free medical. So he was never on the roster nor did he ever count against the cap.

Also:

Now, John’s future remains up in the air. There is no indication whether he will continue his healing arrangement with NYCFC through 2016, though it would seem unlikely at this point. Several sources tell EoS that early retirement may also be an option for the 27-year-old centerback.

John is also currently out of contract with MLS, further muddying the future of one of Major League Soccer’s brightest defensive stars.

Tim Howard, we can use his help.

I was always under the impression that he was on some sorta "Physically Unable to Perform" (a la NFL), where he would get a salary, but it would not count against the cap, since he had an injury. Almost like an IR, but for a player unexpected to play during the season. But then again, I'm probably just making up rules in my head.

But your only mistake is making up rules that make sense, are roughly in line with other leagues, easily understood, and transparent.

Is it really practical, to have poku as a false 9 and lampard as a cam? Aren't they kind of the same position?

As Tom in Fairfield CT said it's hard to get pirlo mix Poku and lamp all into a single lineup. Frankly, if you take any one of them off the team this thread probably only gets 6 responses. The lineup suddenly gets a lot easier to figure out.

Lampard would play more like an 8/10, Poku more like a 10/9. Poku could probably also just play CF, but I personally prefer him deeper to dribble at defenders.

There's also the 4-3-1-2, and maybe we're splitting hair here, but it this moniker emphasizes that the three midfielders are really all holding midfielders, providing defensive support (mainly Mix) and deeper lying playmaking, with Lampard also making late runs into the box. From Wikipedia:

4-3-1-2

A variation of the 4–3–3 wherein a striker gives way to a central attacking midfielder. The formation focuses on the attacking midfielder moving play through the centre with the strikers on either side. It is a much narrower setup in comparison to the 4–3–3 and is usually dependent on the "1" to create chances. Examples of sides which won trophies using this formation were the 2002-03 UEFA Cup and 2003-04 UEFA Champions League winner José Mourinho's FC Porto side; Carlo Ancelotti's 2002-03 UEFA Champions League and 2003-04 Serie A champion AC Milan, and 2009-10 Premier League winner Chelsea. This formation was also adopted by Massimiliano Allegri for the 2010–11 Serie A title-winning season for AC Milan. Real Madrid currently use this formation with Cristiano Ronaldo, and Gareth Bale on the wing, while Karim Benzema plays in the center striker role.

Poku can be our Benzema, with Villa as the Ronaldo and hopefully a free agent or Brandon Barker as the other winger/striker.

The 4-3-1-2 is essentially what Spain did when they played Cesc Fabregas as a False 9 in the World Cup?

I didn't find the George John news surprising at all (see below from August). Good for us to let him train and rehab with the club. Good for him to stick with it. I wish him all the best.

I was curious about this guy and did a little more research.

2014 was the last year of his contract with Dallas, so it's possible that he's not actually under contract to NYCFC, even though we hold his rights. Not sure about that. Do we know whether he is rehabbing in NY and otherwise spending time with the team?

I haven't seen a specific reference to the kind of surgery he had, but it may have been microfracture surgery. If so, that demands a long recovery and is far from reliable in getting people back onto the playing field.

He seems like a good guy and a talented player, so I hope for the best for him.

Thanks for this. Good stuff from Wikipedia on the 4-3-1-2 formation. Though I'm pretty sure when Chelsea won UCL they were playing a 10-0-0 formation. (*cough* parking the bus *cough*)

yeah hope he recovers. what kind of injury would take more than 1 year to rehab? that must be some serious collisions. Soccer is actually one of the most injury prone sports. I think it should be mandatory to wear some additional protective gear.
