Great news for us. He was outstanding second half of the year. Him and Zelalem with Ring and Maxi give us good options in midfield. This remains one of the best rosters in MLS.

Yeah you're definitely right. We have upside on the bench but no stable fourth option for our three-man midfield.

A permanent transfer is better for his development than another loan. MLS is the right level for him right now, and if he outgrows it NYCFC will be happy to sell him on.

Why? It doesn't leave him here forever. Maybe two more years and he gets transferred back to Europe. Certainly better than languishing on Benfica's reserve team.

Oh, me too, but remember, the last guy idiotically rated Mata as a starter, and he fcked up our entire playoffs because he’s bone-headed and horrible. So there’s no telling what a manager will do when they come in.

In fairness to the last guy, deciding on your starting LB was akin to choosing death between drowning or strangulation.
