Labor protections that can be waived are weak.
Club to 34 year old journeyman desperate for work:
- We're offering you a contract for the first half of the season
- That's not legal. You have to offer me a full season.
- Waive your right to a full season. Take it or leave it.
Same true for the other direction. What's the point of having the rule if it can be waived?

It sounds like James wanted the half-season deal, and Minnesota got its certainty by getting a team option to go through December. I just don't really see anything nefarious there.
Except by the law James can’t do that. But clubs and players can always mutually terminate a contract mid-season by simple agreement. So most likely they have a 1 year deal and off-books arrangement to terminate mid-year. Which is probably not enforceable but they trust each other even as they lie to us. It's what they do. CFG, MLS, NYCFC and Lampard all lied in 2014. Occam's razor says MLS is lying again, and as I said earlier, this time they're trying to temper fan expectations rather than build them up. No harm is likely to come of it unless James gets injured. But I really hate lying.
Not sure Sargent would be my choice if I was going to spend $22M on a striker but you have to respect Toronto going for it. It's a heck of a lot more ambitious than spending $8M and a DP spot on a backup striker from the 2.Bundesliga.
Has any MLS team rostered more USMNT notables than Toronto in the last decade with Jozy, Bradley and now Sargent?
It has to be Toronto, you could add Sean Johnson on the list too.
would be a great signing for the hype, but not the kind of player we are in need of right now. and personally, i think growing with nico is better than having a less than fully mobile griezman. i'll be curious if he goes all in and runs his ass off like son is doing.
If the choice is seeing if Griezmann has a few more years left in the tank or a striker that comes off the bench in the german minor leagues I think I'd take my chances with Griezmann.
i agree. and on second thought, he does play as a center forward, so it could have worked out. unfortunately, CFG seem to be over signing aging superstars.
Pendulums. Whenever they swing one way it is tempting to think the swing is permanent.
I'm not so sure we won't have a reverse swing (or at least blip) in the other direction before the stadium opens.
I thought the same but the attempted Sylla signing makes me question that assumption. Unless the deal was going to be structured so it could be bought down or there are unannounced MLS rule changes on the horizon the team knows about they were on a course to tie up 2 of our 3 DP spots with Nico and Sylla past the opening of the new stadium.
