2026 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

I don't know if this is a comparable situation. There were some accusations of Toronto circumventing the cap in the offer to Johnson that I heard NYCFC was upset about. They did seem to try everything to bring him back, but idk if we can say the same with Haak especially considering the max number we know the Galaxy could have offered.

Don’t see the benefit of this unless we plan on flipping for more proven MLS Talent. Can’t use the whole fee for Transfers correct?

Depends if it's a cash deal or a GAM deal, I believe..

If we are signing another big-time striker this offseason I'd think about this. How much playing time would Reid be getting for us? If we're getting 7 figures for him, you have to think about it. If we're fully healthy, he's the 3rd forward on the depth chart. I know he's going to grow and improve, but I'd be surprised to see a scenario where he becomes a first-choice striker within the next 3 seasons. Hanging onto him is a bet that he blows up, but if we can use these profits to find a new DP/TAM striker it's definitely an interesting proposition.

Previous intra MLS deals like Freese and Perea that’s e made were smaller bets. I don’t think we’ve taken a big swing through MLS trades.

We don't typically acquire players through intra-league trades, but we have definitely traded players away. There's a few I can think of off the top of my head like Malte Amundsen and Jonathan Lewis.
Alex Ring, largely due to the Covid cap crunch.

A million plus for a 17 year old in MLS might make sense. OTOH, keeping a 17 year old we developed and who seems to have potential is much cheaper than buying new ones on the international market. If we do sell him, he better not turn into a great player after we spent double digit millions on Ojeda Fernandez and Jovan.

Agreed on both counts. It's a tough call. I think the player is worth more to me on the field than $1 million for the next 2-3 years, but I don't think it's a slam dunk on either side.

I think Haak’s value is underrated and replacing him is not going to be that easy. What a bummer.
I agree with you about Haak's value being underrated, but Raul Gustavo is ready for a center back pairing with Thiago after a preseason of working together and Keaton-O'Neill as 6/8 pairings will result in more goals than the Haak-O'Neill pairing would.

Losing Haak on a free is lousy soccer business -- thats on the David Lee FO for not locking Haak into a contract a year ago.

Keaton, O'Neill, and Perea for those spots, we're really solid back there. Same with Thiago and Gustavo at CB. Signing Haak to a 7-figure contract to be one of 6 starting-level players for four spots would have burnt a hole in our salary cap.

I'm not glad to lose Haak because I agree about how good he has become, but I don't think we are going to see massive decline from that area of the field now that he's gone.

I don't know how to value our D league vs South American leagues. But if Reid had his NYCFC II numbers on an equivalent SA team, how much would we buy him for?

Essentially, how does his NYCFC II production compare with that of Ojeda, Fernandez, Jovan, and maybe most importantly, Bakrar* in their clubs before we bought them?

* Bakrar most importantly because it is the closest monetary equivalent to what it seems we are being offered.

Paul Harvey considers him the best teenage striker in the US youth system by a far margin. Not surprising to see him get this attention or the price tag. I also doubt NYCFC would be entertaining offers for him at this point. I think we all know why this bit was released the day Haak signed though.

so nycfc is now playing the Bogert game? giving him tips for him to report, where before the rarely if ever gave any tips.

Anyone else concerned about Raul as our starting CB? It was only 10 games but he seemed wildly inconsistent.
I like him a lot, and I like the pairing with Martins even more. My guess is the inconsistency had more to do with a couple fatigue-related knocks, plus getting moved around a bit. He should benefit from a full offseason and regular camp and then a solid role going forward.

That's a lot of pace at center back, though. Pascal has the opportunity to be daring. Which is probably why he wanted Raul to begin with.

I thought he was quite good and also deputized well at fullback when we put him there in Philly. I would like another option, but I think Gustavo has that spot going into the season.

We are paying him over $800k for that money he has to be a starter. It's only 10 games and a lot of his time was out of position at LB. He was amazing in the Philly game and horrendous against Miami. Hopefully a full camp will help him settle in but I do think we will miss Haaks consistency. Raul also seemed to end every game with some sort of knock so I worry about his durability.

hard to gauge since he wasn't at CB for those 10 games with martins and without a full preseason.

I will say that he isn't the cleanest on the ball and it does make me nervous that he tries to dribble a bit more than he probably should at times.

Also, he seems a bit injury prone? just the sense I got. Far cry from the iron man we had in callens.

He is dynamic though and reminds me of Callens in that way. Having two CBs with some speed will be beneficial too. For as well as Haak played at CB, he couldn't catch a winger if his life depended on it.
