what changes could possible be requested so late in the deal? player already went for medical. did something show up there?

Only options I can some up with are as you said something came up in the medical or NYCFC wants to back out of the deal for some reason so they are playing games.

I was excited to have a striker lined up to start the season but given what the article says about his form this season maybe it wouldn't be terrible if this does fall through:

The 26-year-old has struggled this season and only has four goals and two assists in 17 2.Bundesliga games.

Nico came from a second division team too but he was reportedly the best player in the league.

The league or origin is just an clue, but not determinative. Not even the fee. Carles Gil, for example, was bought by NER for very little money $1.5 million euros, from Deportivo in 2nd division. He had been worth more a few years back, when Aston Villa paid 6M to Valencia for him, but I don't think he featured for Villa and somehow his value cratered. And he's been, I think, a top 10ish player in MLS for a while.

Machine translation:

"According to available information, the American club finally distanced itself after Sylla underwent a medical check-up in Manchester. In question, reservations linked to an old knee injury as well as certain traces of wear deemed problematic by the MLS franchise. An analysis that Schalke does not share, the player having never encountered any particular problem at this level since his arrival in Germany.

Repeated renegotiations would also have strained the situation, particularly on the structure of the contract. A loan formula had even been mentioned, without managing to unblock the file. As a result, the operation is now close to total failure."

I’m glad they are doing their due diligence. But where’s the back up plan? This is why working earlier in the window is better than later in the window for a position of need. MLS starts in 20 days and we still don’t have a striker.

I am sure there will be a backup plan but they have to go there now and with the European window closing it gets even harder. It's not like they would have been negotiating elsewhere while thinking they had this across the finish line.

They are working early in the window though. There's still time to get someone here before Opening Day.

True but that depends on good scouting. Here's the list of players NYCFC has paid over €4M (€ because that's how transfermkt reports fees) for:
  1. Nico €8M
  2. Jovan €8M
  3. Ojeda €8M
  4. Ferenadez €4.57M
  5. Gabriel Pereria €5M
  6. Magno €7.27
  7. Mitri €8M
Not a list that inspires much confidence that CFG scouting understands MLS well enough to consistently dig up hidden gems like Gil.

I know we've signed lots of "injury-prone" players in the past, so I'm wondering if we're trying to change that and be more proactive in that field. I remember a few years ago (or was it last year???) where we had like half the front/middle injured.

When signing a DP, this is the sort of stuff that should be considered in a cancel of a deal. Why spend 6m+ on someone that might get injured?

And it being a knee injury in a league where there are multiple games played on turf.

It could be that his nagging knee injury is the reason for his underwhelming season in which case we may have avoided a bad move. With that said, we are doomed from the start if we don’t sign a striker before the season starts. Sounds familiar.

If we sign a striker before the end of the winter window we're fine. We still have plenty of attacking talent. I don't want to wait until summer but we are fine if he makes his debut 5 games in or something.

Agreed, better to be cautious and get the right DP than rush.

The challenge will be that the winter transfer window closes today for the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga, and Ligue 1. NYCFC can still get players from those leagues but the transferring team will not be able to replace the player. Not insurmountable but will certainly limit options.

Not my day for striker news. Keinan Davis had to come off against Roma today at 56' with an injury. He walked off under his own power, but he was hiding his face in his jersey. It didn't look good.

On the bright side, Udinese knocked off Roma 1-0. Once again, my Friulani are the giant killers of Serie A.

Anyway, I was doing some poking around the league during halftime, looking for "extra" strikers who might be looking for a change. This guy fits our budget, and Cagliari just signed a young Frenchman (who promptly scored in his first match), so Luvumbo might be available:

Career 9 goals and 9 assists. He's young (23). So I might take a swing as a TAM. But not a DP.

Yeah, I wouldn't stick my neck too far out on him, either. But it's worth noting, when Cagliari came back up a couple years ago, they had some pretty decent, experienced players in the attack. He was as good as any of them.

So, if we're still looking, that might be one name to check in on.

I haven't seen anything official on Moussa Sylla, so maybe that's being renegotiated. Hopefully Glenn and Roberto will have some more info on the Sick Podcast at 7 p.m.

And we still have Seymour Reid to consider.
