All The Soccer Stadiums Of Mls

Putting a roof on a big stadium is actually quite a big challenge. So is putting in a retractable roof. Adding these features jacks the price up considerably because they're hard work for the construction company. Add on top of that that many types of grass need to be exposed to the elements to ensure that they don't deteriorate rapidly (depends on the type of grass and the weather on how much) which means that they can't afford to pick that option anyway. On top of that, FIFA and possibly some other governing bodies have specific rules preventing stadia from being used if they have closed rooves (although retractable rooves are allowed), adding further discouragement.
You just sent me on a 20 minute trek down the rabbit hole trying to figure out if you were just messing with us by using "rooves" because I've never actually seen it spelled that way. My conclusion is that it's happened before, but not often.

Remind me, how wide is Yankees soccer pitch?

Obvously, no Seattle, New England, DC United, Orlando, or NYC soccer specific stadiums yet.

Also, for some perspective:

first thing I thought when I read this was" I wonder how many times Villa traveled from Spain to eastern Turkey? Which is basically what he will do when he travels to play Galaxy, SJ, the Pac NW teams.

Very cool list. What is it with North Americans stadiums and not having a full roof? The new Quakes stadium has one all the way around, but doesn't cover the first 15 rows. Wtf? Why?
Probably a budget thing.

To extend the roof all the way out would probably require more reinforcement along the whole structure, which requires more steel and more hours from workers.

So they probably had to choose between things like the massive bar or extending the roof all the way out and well you can see what they selected.

haha You know, not a bad choice I suppose.

And you're probably right about the cost. I hope NYCFC would go all in and put a nice roof on the stadium.

Just watched the San Jose match on ESPN2 and their new stadium seemed pretty nice (at least it did on TV). The announcers did mention that the stands were incredibly steep though. Not sure if that's bad or not. I've also been to Red Bull Arena a few years ago to see Man City. I really liked it at first but it turned into a friggin' 104° furnace* as there was no breeze at all. The shade from the roof was the only thing that saved it at all.

* technically, not measured with any sort of thermometer
