MLSsoccer dot com (https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017...fc-vs-new-york-city-fc-2017-mls-match-preview) is callign Pirlo's injury a bone bruise. I hadn't seen that before, only swelling in the knee.

A bone isn't a solid material, its a solid shell with a spongy bone matrix inside. So when a bone is hit it can compress to some degree. When some of that spongy bone cracks from the compression, you get a bone bruise. Super painful because the swelling occurs in a confined area (the bone and the fibrous covering of the bone called the periosteum). No structural issues though so its just a matter of how much pain you can play with. Lines up with reports of swelling in the knee and that he'd been trying to play through it. Can be months to get back to playing depending on where it is. And injuries heal more slowly when you are 38.

Any idea when this happened? Does this explain his performance this season?

It could really explain why he's been looking old all of a sudden. There was that video of him in training where he looked 63 going around the cones, and he hasn't been making the aggressive challenges as much like he did when he stepped up last year. If the knee hurts constantly it could explain a lot.

No idea when it started. Anyone remember if he got kicked hard in the knee earlier this year?

Possible retirement through injury?
Starting to look that way doesn't it?
Definitely what I think is being telegraphed.

I might buy the theory that the injury killed Pirlo. We've only seen a corpse lately. I thought he was mostly decent up through the SJ game, even though I wanted to see what we looked like without him.

Whether he leaves at mid season or not, he can't play for us in his current form, if it's due to injury or not.

Whenever Pirlo leaves, I think he gets a very nice sendoff from the team and from fans.
I would love a testimonial with either Juve or AC Milan. Not sure which team he feels more affinity towards.

I have to believe he will have something in Italy regardless of what happens here. I could see AC Milan and Juve having some sort of ceremony before games next season.

With him and Totti retiring, and possibly Buffon (?), I could see a joint ceremony for past members of the 2006 team that are retiring.
