Angelino Redux

Ooooh, MLS gets dismissed without even a second though:

There is certainly no questioning his attacking skills at his point but his NYCFC spell showed that he still has a lot to learn defensively, and another loan stint to a more competitive league for the second half of this season would seem like the wisest move to get him better prepared for the English top-flight.

At least they saved it for the end of the article.

Of course it confirms what we knew about Angie, he doesn't know how to defend.

If you saw his displays for us, you wouldn't think he'd get anywhere near challenging the City left backs.
Unless he masters a wide midfield role, I cant see him making it, at the top level.
I'd like to revisit this question in two years, say. I'm hoping he "just" needs a little seasoning and time. Might not make a difference, but then again it might make *all* the difference.

I don't have a problem with them wanting to look at a more competitive league. MLS is a good league and is only getting better, but outside the top 5, I'd say the Portugese league and probably the Eredivisie(at least the top few teams) are stronger than MLS.

A loan to even a mid to lower level Ligue 1 team could be good for him

Why should we care, his further development has as much to do with NYCFC as Jason Kreis at this point.
Because he's part of the team's history. And not just in general, part of the first season, waaaaaay back at the beginning. I liked him, and I hope he does turn out to be a great player. If he does, in 20 years we can look back at this season as where he got his start. If he turns out to be "just" a good player after a few years of growth and is still with CFG then we could definitely use him. Not saying we should pine over him but it might be worth keeping an eye on him.

I think he can be effective as wingback in the right system. As an out and out fullback, it's tough to imagine him being a big talent without significant development.

In Kreis' typical 4-4-2 diamond, you need a guy who can provide width at that fullback spot. But with the CDM-CB-CB triangle being a problem all year, you can't afford to give your wide guy that much freedom. So Angelino's wings had to be clipped a bit.

There's definitely a good player there, and we'd be a better team if he stayed around.

I think he got too worn out, he played alot of games for the MCFC EDS - other players struggled with fatigue towards the end of their season. He then only had a short break before coming to NYCFC. At MCFC there is a player called Barker who looks to be a very promising talent and he plays LW so Angelino ended up playing at LB whilst most followers of the EDS team expected him to become a winger in the future due to his talent going forward. Surprised he was never tried at LW for NYCFC, i guess he was signed as the defence was a weakness and he looked like a good player who would not cost too much in wages. Also it definitely did not help him that he played in a team that was a mess defensively when he is a 18 year old whoes weakness is defending.

You're right that he didn't play there that often, but I do remember him moonlighting at left wing for at least one game.

Angelino has the most upside if he's able to add enough defensive talent to play wingback at a high level, but he'd be a very, very useful MLS winger three or four years from now.

That ball in by Pirlo was beautiful btw...and despite Angelino's defensive ills, he made some nice off the ball moves on that highlight. That is the problem with more than half our team, they may be athletic, but lack the instincts to make runs like that. He will be missed and I'd take him back in a heartbeat and play him as a left mid playing both ways.

The notion that Angelino is ready for a more competitive league is laughable. After his first few starts, teams routinely targeted his side of the field, carving up NYCFC like a Thanksgiving turkey, while his offensive contributions were slim to none. I agree he still has potential, but he's still 18 and it looked like it. Moving him up to a higher league only will result in him being embarrassed more. Even if MCFC doesn't send him back to NYCFC, it should look for a similar strength of league until he can prove that he can handle even our league.
