Better Call Saul

I'm alright with those two, though I think Mike could have been introduced an episode or two later on. My issue is that they evidently were tapping up pretty much all the recurring cast of BB to try to get as many in as possible. I'm concerned that in episode 3 you're going to have Skylar bumping into Saul somehow, then in episode four he ends up taking on a job for the Nazi guys, then in episode five you'll have Hank and Marie getting caught up somehow while they sneak a brief Walter White shot in the background, and then when they finally revisit the Cinnabon thing, he'll end up serving Badger and Skinny Pete. I know that half of those probably won't happen, but it feels like they would have loved to have done that if they could get all the actors on board.
True true - I share your concern - we'll just see how it goes

As for the Cinnabon thing - that's present day after BB in Omaha, Nebraska so I doubt we'll see any crossover there

I have been so busy with school that I haven't had a chance to watch the last episode yet, and the next one is on tonight. I really didn't want to do this, but I guess I'm going have to save up a few episodes and watch them all at once when i get a chance.

Haven't watched it yet since the second episode. I've been busy with school and I prefer to binge watch any way. Can anyone that has watched the entire thing so far just give me a review without giving too much away? Should I be excited to get through 6 or so episodes this weekend?

I'm one episode behind and it's better than I hoped. We just learned a lot about Mike's back story. Awesome stuff. I think you'll be pleased.

Finally all caught up and ready for the season finale on Monday, April 6! Gotta say, I'm thoroughly impressed with the direction they went despite the drop in viewers from 6.88 million to 2.38 between episode 1 through 9.

While checking The Wikipedia's, I noticed that all of the episode titles (except one) end in "o":
  1. Uno
  2. Mijo
  3. Nacho
  4. Hero
  5. Alpine Shepherd Boy
  6. Five-O
  7. Bingo
  8. RICO
  9. Pimento
  10. Marco
Not sure of the significance, but I love little things like that.

Given everything that happened in Episode 9 (best of the season if you ask me), I really wished Jimmy took the offer, or take the offer if it's still available. He would get 20% of the $20 mil, that's $4 mil for himself, plus the $20K for the research he did. However, since we have the luxury of hindsight from Breaking Bad, doesn't look like it'll happen.

Now that we see, because of pride and his own sense of morality, what Jimmy passed up, I don't think it was a mistake that they showed how Gene (Jimmy/Saul) was living his life in Omaha in the present-day (post-Breaking Bad) during the opening of the pilot episode. Seeing how scared, beaten, and sad he was only makes me think how different his life would have been if he's just taken the offer. In the end, was it all worth it...

Please be sure any responses use the Spoilers box - don't want to ruin anything for those not caught up

This show has fully exceeded my expectations. I don't track ratings so it's a disappointment to learn that they have dropped so much. If these are live viewer figures, my hope is that folks treated it like appointment viewing at first, then became comfortable recording it for later. Thoughts on the season so far thru Ep9 behind the tag:
I think Jimmy did take the deal. He say's he is going to, and without his brother he is even more incapable of taking the case on by himself. We don't know what that case will payout. It could be less than $20 mil, HHM could renege, and even if Jimmy does recover $4mm for himself, that doesn't inevitably prevent him from becoming Saul Goodman. First, it could take years for that case to resolve, and $20k will go fast. He will have to scramble in the mean time. Plus, $4mm after taxes is at best $2.5mm, maybe less (plus it's probably 40% of the net after expenses) and frankly I believe Jimmy/Saul could run through that quite easily.

And what an amazing acting job by Michael McKean. He gives himself away, ever so subtly, in both the scene when Jimmy reveals he passed the bar and then later when they discuss him joining the firm. His lack of respect for Jimmy is there for a passing moment that Jimmy would miss because he's so desperate to believe Chuck's fake professions of pride, but I suspect most viewers noticed, even if like me, they discounted it for a while until the reveal.

And how much does this make us reassess Hamlin? Granted he's probably not going to become a fan favorite still, but he is recast completely as a true loyal partner to Chuck, taking all the heat and blame from both Jimmy and other staff for Chuck's refusal to treat Jimmy with courtesy and professionalism, much less brotherly love. And he keeps up this charade/burden all through Chuck's illness. He doesn't despise Jimmy, and it pains him to have people think he does, and he clearly hated not being able to answer Jimmy when he asked why, and finally had to cave to reveal the truth to Kim. Such an amazingly well written character arc. Even the way he abused Kim for calling him on it, because we're most likely to lash out at someone for criticizing us for doing what we know is wrong and don't want to do anyway. Just good, solid stuff.
And we haven't even barely mentioned Mike, but his whole back story is about everything I could have wished for. He was dirty but honorable from the way back, all the way in Philadelphia.
And good catch on the titles.

The risk is that the show gets cancelled because people don't make an effort to catch it when it airs, then everyone makes a scene.

If anyone was interested, for those gamers amongst us, the balding, gobby gunman in the latest episode was played by the same guy who did Trevor Phillips in GTA V. I was amused when I realised it was him.

Vince Gilligan is the man. I never doubted this show wouldn't be incredible, as long as he is the main show runner and has creative control, especially on a cable network, this show is going to be good. Hopefully it only has a 2 season arc, otherwise I think he'll be stretching it.

Would love to see another spin off ALA chicken brothers!

Gilligan has nailed it.

After BB which could never be surpassed; it was near impossible to see 'where we could go from here', but Gilligam has done it.
Everybody loves Saul and to see how he got to the point where he first meets Walter is intriguing, this series is filling in the spaces that BB lovers crave, hopefully Gilligan will have the same thoughts about Jessie and create a series about him which should prove a lot more entertaining.

If you've never seen Breaking Bad then I would expect you'd find 'Better Call Saul' a bit aloof otherwise it's a great remedy for the 'Cold turkey' us Breaking Bad fans are going through since the series finished.

Exactly, I think everyone doubted his ability to replicate BB, and that was only because he did such a great job it was tough to imagine anything better.

I stopped at casino outside of Santa Fe called Thunderhawk about two years ago and a road trip around the country I took 4 months off for. There was a blackjack dealer, older woman with red hair, who as we started talking told me she appeared in an episode of BB because Vince casted people locally. She told me he was one of the nicest people she's ever met, and she had that southern quality that made me believe she meant it.

And I agree, watching BCS without BB doesn't have the same impact, but you never know.

Just finished the first season and I really enjoyed it!

I thought the first few episodes were slow, but then the season really started to pick up.

I think Mike's story is the most enjoyable, and he is my favorite character.
