DC United Postmatch

What is the point of Lopez? I hate to complain after a win, but that is a shitty DC team, if we don't win those games, we just need to give up. If you are going to be stubborn keeping a good player on the bench, his replacement better be playing amazingly. Lopez can't keep possession, made zero plays on defense and doesn't do the secondary run his position requires. Ffs, play mix.
agreed. Lopez was stripped of the ball numerous times

Than should really be a corollary of 2. We can add a 4th step.
Mikey's to-do list:

1) Lose the ball
2) Fight to get it back via card-worthy tackle
3) Repeat
4) Profit
I'm a process guy, and I think this iteration captures what we're trying to do.

If Bravo could just turn it over slightly more often, imagine how good our midfield could be.

5. Miss an easy header once a game
Well, there is that one that I left out.

I honestly wonder if that guy can finish with an empty net. I am thinking no way. I've never seen someone play in panic-mode for 90 minutes until him. Spurs losing title hopes versus Chelsea, last 10 minutes = Mikey all the time.

Team mates were congratulating Khiry for his header (maybe need a new OG rule considering the defender shoved him into the ball?) and he was playing it super cool. Then Pirlo came over and said something and Khiry started beaming like his dad just told him he loved him for the first time. It was a moment.
Maybe he asked him how many times he'd scored with his nipple.

I'm not that hard on Lopez, but I do believe that Mix is a much better choice. I also think that Lopez played rather poorly in this game. He did get open and almost put one in early, but he also turned it over way too many times.

Bet it sounded sexy in Italian.

Of course, I agree. But best game of his life, still.

I've seen references to a cool but unsuccessful corner play that I seem to have missed. Can someone clue me in to roughly where in the game it occurred?

I know at one point TMac basically tried to replicate the Villa goal from last game. He spun out and around to the far post, but Neagle stuck to him like glue.

Several of my thoughts, some of them already mentioned:

  • TMac had a great game, very smart in his positioning and greatly influenced our first goal. I really like PV subbing Mendoza on for him as the fullback and CBs dealing with TMac are used to a much slower person, and in comes a burner against tired legs. Really changes the game there. Mendoza still looked pretty decent last night, though he still has some finishing to work on (both in shooting as well as decision making into the right pass)
  • Khiry had another lovely game, his confidence is really starting to turn on. He completely set up our first goal by attacking the defender and using his speed to cross it in hard. Also, have no clue what the hell he was doing on his shot (can you call it that?) in the box
  • As Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan pointed out, Pirlo had a fantastic game releasing Mata down the field. Additionally, I noticed when Pirlo has the ball with a little space, that Khiry is looking to make diagonal runs behind the defense. Pirlo played a couple there that didn't quite work out, but good to see Khiry figuring out what Pirlo can do
  • Lopez...meh. Was he even playing? He seemed to not impact the game at all. Now, his missed header I did think was pretty decent, considering the angle he was coming from, but it honestly looked like he just wasn't even on the field. If Bravo hadn't gotten a yellow, I wish Mikey would have.
  • Bravo had a very, very good first half. His distribution still has quite a way to go, but he was very physical and great at breaking up attacks
  • Mata, wonderful
  • Hernandez had another solid game, and I've never been a huge fan of his, but he's putting together a nice season so far. Though I have a heart attack every time he passes it back to Saunders. His distribution is terrible
  • Brillant had a fantastic match. He also played quite a few good long balls to Mata bombing down the pitch.
  • Saunders had probably his best match in a NYCFC uniform. Now I know he faced 0 shots on goal, but he made some very nice plays. Outside of booting the ball out of bounds, there was really only one play where I was screaming at him, and that was a play that DCU was offsides on anyways. In the first half he looked very hesitant in coming off his line to break up attacks, second half was much better
