Would you give Ring a DP contract?
DP money on a TAM contract. There are only 2 defensive mids in the league who are DPs-Michael Bradley and Ozzie Alonso. Bradley is crazy overpaid, and Alonso makes 1.1 million. I’m all for paying Ring is that 500K to 1 M range, but I don’t think I would want to use a precious DP spot. He’s one of the best D-mids in the league, he is a hugely important part of our team, he’s a leader, and he’s a known commodity. But it’s also a position where there is a lot of value to be had in MLS.

Which player on our roster is the most valuable to our on the pitch success? Not talking about driving interest and jersey sales. Just the one player who is indespensable.

People may not agree, but I think it might be Alex Callens. He and Chanot were one of the best CB pairings in the league, and we haven't missed a beat with Ibeagha. That has to be a sign of just how good Callens is, right?

If not him, definitely Ring. That guy's our engine.

It’s close between Ring and Maxi since they’re our defense to offense links and drive so much of what we do but we have a little more cover on the defensive side so I’d give the edge to Maxi.

That's my thought. I'm surprised that we're 0-4 here with Villa.

Ring is the one guy we can't afford to lose. If we're paying Maxi, why not Ring?
There’s an argument that Maxi is more TAM-level than DP level, and I think Ring is definitely just a TAM level of player - a great one at that.

Ring is definitely the future team captain - he’s constantly directing/getting on players (not like TMac) when they are missing assignments, and he leads by example never putting less than 110% effort or sulking. That said, he’s a winner and pretty humble, so I don’t think he’d selfishly insist on DP money when that would limit the team’s possible success by not being able to sign an exceptional player.

I agree that both Ring and Maxi should be TAM players. That's my thought. I guess Ring as a normal salary player and Maxi as a DP shakes out but it's another argument against our cap management techniques.

But remember Callens missed the 2nd Leg of the Semifinals last year and Ben Sweat kept a clean sheet with Frederic Brillant against Columbus.

I think you ask this last year I would have said Villa, or at least had a good argument for him. Not because I think Maxi or Ring are more important then they were last year, but because of the drop off between starter and backup. Last year we had Okoli backing up Villa, which didn’t work out great, and secondary scoring wasn’t consistent enough, especially at the end of the year. This year, Berget does a lot of good things, and it hopefully starting to get some goals. ITS and Maxi have also found a great scoring touch.

The backup for Ring right now is who? Ofori? Sands? That’s a big gap. Even Maxi. Who’s backing him up? Medina maybe? Hope to hell it’s not TMac.

Speaking of losing Ring, anyone else concerned that last year on his social media it was very clear that his wife and 2 young daughters lived here in the city with him and this year that does not seem to be the case? The guy appears to be super close with his family, it's bit worrisome as to how long he will stick around that they are not here this year.

I did notice that, and yes, my first thought was shit, that can’t mean good things long term.

Are they not living here, or he’s being more careful about what he posts about his family?

They’ve been here with him. But that doesn’t allay any concerns for me that we will lose him at some point. But, that’s a good problem to have since it’s down to how quality he’s been.

Villa is our best player (yes, still).

Ring is our most indispensable player. The guy we can least afford to lose.
