Bye-Bye Barclays. Next year the League is simply going to be called the "Premier League" with no corporate sponsorship. New logo too.

Today sees the launch of an exciting new visual identity for the Premier League which will be used from Season 2016/17 onwards.
Working in partnership with global agency DesignStudio and Robin Brand Consultantsthe League has created a bold and vibrant identity that includes a modern take on the lion icon – a symbol that is part of the competition’s heritage – which is flexible in digital and broadcast formats.

I have to be honest, I love the current logo and thought the above were kind of eh, but the more I look at them the more I like them. Wonder how many millions they're leaving on the table by not having a corporate sponsorship? TV money must be awfully good!

P.S. If Barclays have their feelings hurt and are looking to sponsor an up-and-coming League, you can call this number: (212) 450-1200. Ask for Don.

Taking notes from North American leagues.

Dat branding.

That said, all of those new logos look dumb to me.

1. Kudos to any sports entity that turns down corporate sponsorship and keeps their brand a bit more pure.
2. There has been much talk on this forum disdaining the use of soccer balls in logos. Generally I agree. But the PL lion with the foot on the ball is just badass. The lion without the ball loses it's footy sense. This strikes me as a classic example of a marketing department needing to justify their existence and convincing of the need to change something that was better as it was. Count my vote for the old logo.

Why can't they just remove "Barclays" from the current logo and reformat the words "Premier League"?

This is their Twitter account profile picture, and it's perfect.

Ugh. I'm all for the decision to have no title sponsor for competitions but that new design is unnecessary and awful. The previous logo was just perfect. Why did they need to have to change it?

The new logo doesn't look terrible, but it's clearly a downgrade.

Wow.
I knew Barclays was on the way out but I assumed they were going to partner with someone new. I can't believe they're walking away from money.

I think they've basically realised that they've got to the point where their TV revenue is so high that the title sponsorship was a drop in the ocean. Other English competitions (including the FA Cup, for example) have struggled to get new sponsors at all recently, so they likely thought that rather than try to shop around for a company that would quadruple their previous figure to keep the amount relevant, it was simpler to just enjoy the freedom.

anyone know how much Barclay's were paying for those naming rights?

Barclays were paying £40m a year. Compare that to the £5.1b in domestic broadcasting rights alone for the period 2016-19 plus a massive increase in foreign broadcasting which has not even been finalised yet - there are projections that from 2016, the PL will earn more per club from TV money per year than NFL clubs do. That £2m/club/season becomes an absolute pittance.

They're going to sell many smaller sponsorships like the NFL does. Official this of the Premier League, Official that of the Premier League.

Trust me, they ain't turning down 1p.

I think the lion head is nice, but a step down from the lion they had. That one was timeless and classy.

The new arm badge is TERRIBLE. That is some MLS 1.0 type of shit right there.

When did Orlando become the official sponsor of the Premier League?
