Formation Speculation

Yes, sir. I see your point, and it's completely reasonable. It's just not what I would prefer. No reason for me to go on about it.

Fair do. I can understand the frustration that it happens to be Lampard but i guess that is one of the fan / work attachments to the club that differ. You have the right to not like the fucker and they will learn from him. I hated Tevez after his stunt. Absolutely overjoyed when he left. I feel your pain lol.

Anyway you are right lets move on.

When I see Shelton at what looks like his best, he is right in front of goal, for a big guy, he controls the ball well and knows how to make a run. When he played on the wing, in the midfield, he didn't look like he knew what to do.
I would really love to see him partnered with Villa, and then set up the midfield to get and keep possession to get it to them. Sounds like Kreis is going to go experience first and slowly work in the younger or newer guys. Colorado is a great opportunity (smaller crowd, not great opponent) to work in some of the less experienced guys.

4-1-4-1 means one striker. Who is that? Villa? Awful lonely up there. Who will give him service? On this roster?
I like to think of it as no striker (think Germany). Villa would just be your most advanced midfielder, and you just make runs off each other. Probably too complex tactically for a new team, so you just go for a similar effect with 4-3-3 with Villa as a false 9.

Since I didn't answer your question before, "EC" = entitled cunts. It was an insult hurled often at us NYCFC-first supporters around the FF debacle. We just re-appropriated it as a badge of honor that indicates that we have the audacity to plead with the powers that be to treat the club with respect.

Cheers for getting back, i figured later, its a thread somewhere.

For sure, if you aint happy say something. More often than not if it is a coherent and organised idea which is do-able they tend to be ok and changes things. If its just uncoordinated shite, they wont lift a finger.

The FF debacle was organised and had fair points, i think they were shown up and no one likes being shown up. They have seemed to have gotten better as those organised points made them realise they cannot pull any old trick.

Fans 1-0 Owners.

Villa got 0 service against lackluster Orlando and that's with Nemec helping. I think you play Nemec, Shelton or Mullins up top and get Villa more involved by playing him in a high LM/LW position. He was wasted for 90% of Orlando game.

I think that was a function of the midfield wasteland. Bringing villa back guarantees that you waste him just trying to keep possession. I say keep him high and be patient and ready to receive the service when it comes.

Getting Calle and Shelton in the game would do wonders for the service

Why are some of you so high on Calle? Have we actually seen him make an impact in a NYCFC game? If so, tell me where so I can watch it and be converted. I want to believe.

Please enlighten me.....
During the beginning of his career, he played there exceptionally for West Ham, which is what tempted Chelsea to buy him in the first place.

During the major part of his career, when he was at his peak, he rarely played there as he was more useful breaking from a deeper role in Mourinho's 4-3-3 formation with Makelele/Essien/Ballack/Tiago. That was when he had high levels of stamina and his physical ability was at it's finest.
Towards the end of his Chelsea career, his physical ability went on the decline meaning he had less energy and found it difficult to contribute in an attacking sense playing in the box-to-box midfield role, leading Chelsea to lose faith in his ability (therefore not offering him a new contract).

Then, as we all know too well, he joined MCFC. At City, he enjoyed his best form in years. This is because he has been played behind the striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation, this has given him the freedom to control the game in the area of the pitch where he can make a difference - the final third. He has been able to make his trademark runs without the shackles of defensive responsibility. The only time he has look vulnerable is when he has played in his "natural" position as he hasn't got the legs to run the midfield in a two (or even a 3) as well as he used to.

I am not saying he can't play a deep-lying central midfield role in MLS, in fact I'm sure he can. I'm not even saying we won't or shouldn't play him there, but to say he's "uncomfortable and outta his element" in a number 10 role is ill-informed.

I think Mix is a deep lying playmaker who can make a run. I don't think he's a guy who can run at a defender. I think Lampard is a high playing playmaker who can make a run. I also don't think he's a guy who can run at a defender. Both have the ability to put the ball in the goal. Neither can create their own.

Which is why Shelton and Villa are so important. Only two guys I have seen on this roster who can run at a player and either provide service or put the ball on goal.

Damn. I had forgotten Mullins. I would play him on the front left in 4-3-3. He's a smart player.

Front 3 of Mullins, Villa, Shelton. Midfield of Grabavoy, Mix and Jacobson. Jacobson stays back. Grabavoy has responsibilities before getting forward, let Mix roam.

That's it. I've solved it. Give us the cup now.

I know nothing of his West Ham career so sure, he played there but that was 15 years ago.

Your interpretation of a 10 is different than mine. You make it sound like he's been strictly playing behind the striker for City when that's not the case. Playing off the striker doesn't mean he's playing as a 10. For me, a 10 is the point guard. For City, he's playing at the edge of the box, essentially a second striker. I was basing my post purely off of his appearances as a 10 for Chelsea.
