Formation Speculation

What about: Calle--Villa--Shelton as a front 3?

I like what I've seen from Calle and want to see more too. Here's the look in a 4-1-4-1 or 4-3-3 hybrid:

Code:
---------------------Villa-----------------------
---Calle--------------------------------Shelton--
-----------Grabavoy-------------Mix--------------
--------------------Jacobson---------------------
-------------------------------------------------
--Wingert----Hernandez-------Facey-----Williams--

That looks effective to me. Three box to box guys in the middle, enough width up front without relying on fullbacks and enough speed and attacking options to take pressure off Villa.

It's possible to try that during the end of a game when behind, but too many unknowns there to start out with unknown players with little chemistry and defensive ability. Orlando did a good job for a good chunk of the game on offense, and to be honest, they aren't very good. NE Revs will be very good and aggressive against NYCFC this weekend. I like the idea of a 4-2-3-1 honestly.

Also in the broadcast, it sounds like Kreis, if we went with a diamond, would play Mix at the bottom of the diamond. He said it's not about being a destroyer. It's about having a guy who can control the game from that spot. Makes sense. Especially if you think we're landing Xavi to join with Lampard in the summer.

I really agree with this.

I haven't seen enough of Calle yet. I haven't seen him play more than 30 minutes yet so who knows where his fitness is at and until he gets on the field for more than the last 5 minutes of a game I'm not ready to put him in as a starter.

At this point, let's see if he can play as a LB. The way we tried playing on Sunday, it was obvious Jason wanted his backs to get forward - and they couldn't. Williams put a little pressure on Shea, but nothing memorable. Very weak on the back.

Maybe it's time to put Facey in as the RB?

We need more width and we need wingers that are natural wide players- fast skilled players that can take people on. Or we need outside defenders that are good at getting forward and whipping in crosses. Currently we have none of that. Although, I still haven't had the chance to see our players play enough so I'm not sure exactly what we have I guess. Thats what I would like to see though.

I think he is trying to put him at LW, not quite a forward not really a midfielder.
Calle and McNamara seemed to be the only guys capable of playing in the style that mix wants to move the ball. Since mix is the cheif orchestrator, we need to play the guys with him that will do what he wants and is expecting. Ballouchy and grabavoy both dribble into trouble and hold the ball longer than needed. I would definitely give Calle a run, and poku and McNamara.

Grabs kept on getting muscled off the ball by younger more physical players. That's why he gave up that last FK. He didn't have the legs to outrun the CM guy and did a lazy body check.
So something like:

Calle------Villa-----Shelton
-----Mix----AJ----Poku/Mac

?

Idk man, it's like we have so many options, in an ideal world, we'd play like 15 preseason games so we could have a clearer idea of what worked.
I still want to keep Nemec on as a bruiser, then sub Khiry in the second half and have him strech the field. The only one with less time with the team that Nemec is Calle. And he was struggling with the garbage turf in Orlando. Even Villa missed a clear chance due to some weird bounce. I'd say while we clearly identified certain things, we have to pay patient and not freak out. The one main problem was our inability to consistently feed Villa. We settled for long balls to Nemec.

I think I said this in another thread, but I'm not ready to start Calle yet. I've seen him play 30 minutes max and I'm not sure where his fitness is so I'm not comfortable with him starting yet. I think Kreis needs to utilize him as an early 2nd half sub until we see what he can really do. If he proves himself then I agree that he should start as a wide midfield player

He's definitely proven that he might be useful for the Giants.

Looking forward a bit, once Lampard arrives, one writer said we might have a slight lopsided formation. Shelton / Williams expected to cover more ground on right hand side. Calle / Taylor / Velasquez / Grabavoy (and Jacobson if we get d-mid 3rd DP) subbed in depending on the game situation. Something like this...

Villa ------------- Nemec

----------------------------------------------- Shelton

------------------- Lampard

--- Mix

----------------- Jacobson (or 3rd DP)

Wingert -----------------------------------Williams

---------------Hernandez ---- Facey

------------------- Saunders
