Formation Speculation

I think the idea is to not need a hold up man. If we have to boot it forward, Poku can be the target man.
This. We have been at our best when players have been fluid in their positions and taking a player with Barca in their history doesn't make sense to stick him in a traditional box.

From watching Poku, I don't think he is a hold up player either. He could be, but he needs to be taught it.

Mullins is a decent hold up player. I'm surpised. Nemec is very good at it.

Shelton and Poku are still learning the game.

And Poku has been at his best when he is turned and facing upfield. He needs time and space to pick up his head and read the forward passing options. Target striker makes no sense for him.

He can bring the ball down and not be completely worthless. I don't want to play someone solely to hold the ball up.

I did not mean to imply we should play him as a target striker. I said he could be the target for long outlets. That's all. Call him the relief valve if you want. But we shouldn't be doing that very often.

More support for keeping Jacobson on the field even with the new signings:

Someone on Reddit observed that we are 3-1-1 since starting Facey-Hernandez-Jacobson in the middle. And the one loss? We were up 2-0 to the Cosmos until Hernandez was subbed off. With those players on the field, we have only given up 3 goals in 5 games.

Let's not break that up.

That's a damn good record, albeit against very weak competition minus TFC.

That's a good clarification. So if we are just saying that Saunders can kick his goal kicks at Poku and otherwise we forget the whole concept of a target striker, then I'm in.

That's like playing a 4-1-5. It would be run over by counter attacks. Pirlo played at the base of the midfield in this formation at Juve, but he had runners on his sides. Not Lampard. Like this:

But I'm still not convinced we can pull Jacobson off the field. We'll see.

Disagree. Was modeling a narrow midfield. Pirlo doesn't move much. Lampard up and back. Mix up and back. Two wingbacks.

If we wanna give pirlo the best cover I think this would work best

------------------Villa---------------
Angelino------Lampard-------Mix
-----------Pirlo--------Jacobson----
Wingert-------------------------Iraola
---------Hernandez-----Facey-----

You got angelino and jacobson helping clean up next to pirlo, and allow lampard to go box to box. All this talk about a CAM, we don't need one. We got a player maker in pirlo, a midfielder who can score goals in lampard and mix, and villa. We will score goals. You got poku who can come off the bench if we are down as well.

You have wingert in, so I question your sanity.

I'm not sure why everyone keeps putting Angelino right into our July lineup. I believe the hype, but he is still just 18 and knows nothing about the league, the extensive travel or the MLS style of play. Angelino will have to excel in training and earn his way into the lineup like Facey did when he gets the opportunity. I am not expecting to see Angelino start until late August. With mentors like Iraola and Villa I think he will be fantastic and the first NYCFC to MCFC starter, but not right away.

Damn you and your cold water of realism!

This is very rational. However, we started a guy one week after he was signed from the YSL coaching ranks of Long Island. And our fullbacks have been really, really terrible.

If Calle is healthy, then Angelino can and should be afforded more time. If Calle is still out, Angelino should be given the opportunity to learn on the job, IMO. Now, given how conservative Kreis is, I'd bet his thinking is more like yours.

Kreis line of thinking is that 2015 is Wingert's year long swan song, and Angelino is going to end up with Calle's season long injury too, if he thinks he is going to take wingy's spot.

I just don't think Veira sends the kid here if he wasn't going to play. He is ours until November. That means he misses July training camp with EDS and games August-December.

If he wasn't going to play, and play a lot, Veira gives him a month off and says I'll see you when camp opens in July.

Which Angelino will be a better player in November. The Angelino who takes a summer holiday and gets max playing time with EDS come August or the Angelino who trains with NYCFC in July, wins a starting spot in August/September and starts in Yankee Stadium as we make our successful playoff push and go for the MLS Cup. Veira knows Angelino will be treated fairly at NYCFC. If Angelino can't beat out Brovsky or Wingert for a starting spot in 2015 he is a long long way from MCFC.
