Losing Patience

I disagree, this is much easier than baseball, you have talent all over the world, and there are plenty of free agents available, not in MLS but ones that come from the other 100 or so leagues in the world much of which are better than MLS. Bringing new talent into the league is what needs to be done , not retread MLS lifers.
Problem is, do many free agents want to come to the U.S.? So many free agents willing to take a pay cut? Most quality free agents out there are DP level, we only get 3. CFG apparently said no transfer fee, and also said no 3rd DP. What can we expect Kreis and NYCFC to do with those restrictions?

I think many on here on are oversimplifying the problem, and not properly educated on the reality of MLS roster rules.

I am the biggest MLS soccer rule nerd there is. CFG saying no 3rd DP and no transfer fee are certainly not MLS rules and further prove my point. Also, I have laid zero blame on Jason Kreis. The only restrictions to building a roster in MLS is the salary, granted that is a large restriction but for example, we are paying George John $300K, could we not have found a pretty decent player from Latin America for that number, I think we could have. Or jacobsen's $180K or Hernandez $210K, those salary numbers without question would fetch talented players by MLS standards. So , I would encourage folks to not oversimplify and say its too hard to build a roster in MLS because of the restrictions.

When did CFG apparently say no 3rd DP? CR has repeatedly said they expect to sign one this summer (for what that's worth)? I have never seen any suggestion that CFG is against that.

They also said there was no way Fat Frank wouldn't be here at the beginning of the season.

Do you think we don't have a 3rd one because Kreis is too picky, or Reyna is trying to save money?

No, because the transfer window is closed until the summer. There is a big difference between directly saying they don't plan to sign a third DP and assuming we will not. The latter leaves the possibility regardless of what you or I think. My question is whether you have any support for your suggestion that they have actually said that. I simply wanted to see whether I missed it.

Their never going to say it. Actions speak louder than words. They had a year plus before the season started. There's been plenty of chances. Teams like RSL & Portland, small cities with less spendy owners have 3 DPs. Except for a few salaries there's no transfer fees on this entire team. What's CFG's excuse?

Either they greatly underestimated the league's talent level or this entire team is nothing more than a money making machine. I'd prefer their excuse to be the first of the two options I just listed above.

Are there any rules that limit who expansion teams can sign for their first season? If so, this might explain why our roster is sub-par.

Nope no excuse like that.

Orlando has 3 DPs too.

There are many viable excuses. The summer is the best opportunity to have the best and most options. They wanted to wait a few months to determine needs (turns out there are many). They have been investigating up until this point and have not found any advantageous adds. Potential tranferees/signees have been disinterested. They have no intent on signing anyone. And so on.

We don't know, but will be in a better position to judge in a few months. I just don't think the fact that they haven't yet signed a third DP conclusively confirms that they will not sign someone this summer. We shall see.

Looking back on the Q&A back at Legends, seems a lot of things we were promised were absolute bullshit. I would've preferred honesty, even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear. The only glimmer of hope I can see now is Fat Frank coming to town (whether it will actually happen is anybody's guess), but it seems even after he comes and if we do start winning, we are still way down in the hole at this point.

There's another issue that no-one ever seems to refer to. Most of the world's top leagues run Autumn to Spring, unlike MLS. That means that when we were signing most of our roster, the teams doing the selling were half-way through their seasons already. Teams don't like selling players half-way through the season unless the players aren't doing well and they are trying to jettison them. If a club is willing to sell a good player, they will only agree to sell them if they can arrange to buy a replacement first, and that means finding another player of the same quality who plays in the same position. Somewhere along the line the system tends to break down, taking a lot of prospective transfers with it - it doesn't help as well that most clubs will string the best bargains out right until the last day of the window, so if the transfer falls through you've basically got no time whatsoever to find an alternative.

It's a problem that a lot of teams in Europe face as well - if things aren't going right, they struggle to adjust their squad in the winter break because the right players aren't available then. If you look at the transfer deadline days in January and in August/September, the overriding difference is usually that in the summer, a flurry of late deals happens right at the end, while in winter most of the deals break down and don't happen at all.
