Mikkel "Mix" Diskerud [Midfielder]

Wish we still had him. First sub off the bench every game or as a starter when injuries or international call ups occur. Definitely glad we don't have that contract though.
Yea. It's not clear how the buyout rules work, but his loan does expire, at which point he could go back to MLS. If we are eligible to bid on him, and can get him cheap, he would be a great addition to the club, especially if Pirlo departs in some way. That is assuming he did not burn his bridges here, which is not an easy assumption to make based on last year.

The problem is, would he be willing to play in Columbus, Foxboro, Houston, or really anywhere else in the league? Some speculation in the past basically says he was NYC or bust when it comes to MLS. That theory gained some credibility when he did not end up somewhere else in the league. Mix is a good player, and seeing as another MLS club could have picked him up for a fraction of his bloated salary, that has to indicate that he either has character flaws that other clubs did not want to touch, or he was unwilling to play elsewhere.

Yeah, I am wondering if some of that stuff starts to wane with the passage of time - on both sides.

I said this before the season, and I believe it even more now. We finally have a team completely ripe for a player like Mix, and we banished him.

Weird, no doubt. But who knows what made what possible.

From a talent perspective, we'd no doubt be better off with him than without. But how can we ever even claim to guess what of our current spoils would or would not be possible.

He signed a four year deal, if I remember correctly. So MLS still owns his contract until the end of the 2018 season. NYCFC bought out his contract but we're still technically paying his contract value just off our MLS salary budget charge. In order to sign him, I don't know if we would have to pickup the full amount or if we can sign him for a fraction of what the contract is worth like the Swedish club that he plays for know is doing.

If it's the latter, we could pay him the league minimum on our books and he'd still be getting paychecks for the league minimum plus the $700K annual salary off the books. This would be a steal for us. He'd obviously go for it financially, but I don't know if the league would go for it. Because if so, you could sign a DP player, buyout their contract, and then pay him shit on the books but he gets the DP salary in his pocket.

I'd like to see Mix back on the roster for a significantly lower salary. I'd have to get a new Mix jersey though which would suck.

IF what you're suggesting is possible, to re-sign a bought out player, then that player would have first gone through waivers and every team would have a chance to sign him first. Maybe that's what happened with Mix and every team passed??? That would be why it'd be nearly impossible to go the route with DP's, because if they truly are DP-quality, other teams would show genuine interest and the value of the contract picked up would competitively be bid back up towards the norm; the problem would stem from extra money being paid to the player "off the Cap books" and that's what MLS is trying to discourage.

Technically, this may be possible per the rules, a real loophole, so the first time it's tried (Mix?) they'd have to let it go through, but then they'd close the hole immediately. We've seen LA find loopholes (or were they intentional MLS rules to help LA get the player they wanted?) so anything is conceivable, and after the fact the rule was publicized for the rest of the league.

I'm still surprised nothing came out about what truly happened.
He's still under contract with the league. There's probably verbiage in his contract that keeps him from saying anything.

Unfortunately our most reliable source had the nerve to get married, move across the country, and become a Quakes fan, rather than mine former disgruntled players for the inside scoop. NYCFCfan NYCFCfan :tonguewink:
NYCFC > other teams

But he's still under contract with MLS, so come August we will see where he goes. I doubt there is a NDA in his contract, it's just bad business to trash your former club. It makes you a liability and other teams are much less likely to pick you up.

Mix is a very smart guy, his agent is also smart so they will both keep quiet unless it will benefit them. When they have something to gain from talking, then they will. Until then we won't hear anything.
