MLS Cup Playoffs - December 11 - Portland (Away)

Front Office / Third Rail is working on a block of hotel rooms. More information tomorrow/Tuesday.
Thanks for letting me know. Hopefully when that info comes out, if it's good for me I might be joining y'all. Low chance, though.

Looks like that should be the case, yes.

So once again, regardless of if we win or not, we will be in an international competition. Nice!
I think Leagues Cup is the two best teams from each conference that’s didn’t make CCL, so the spot would go to Minnesota should Portland win. Not 100% sure if this.

this is correct. if portland win, we don't get leagues cup. so it's CCL or BUST

Kind of glad about that, to be honest. Leagues Cup in its current formulation isn't really worth the agita. Maybe when they change it in 2023 I'll feel differently, but for now I'd rather not deal with it. CCL I'm all for, but Leagues Cup ... I'm really OK without it.

My credit card has been charged and I got an email confirming my seats, but it has a map of yankee stadium, also when I try to access my events it says there are no events available. Anyone else with the same situation as me?

Hoping I can get some tickets tomorrow at 4pm
I think you will be able to. I think they’re choking availability on purpose to create demand. I can’t see them filling 2500 seats (if that is indeed their allocation)

We are allocated up to 2,500 tickets. Getting a ticket to this match will not be a problem.

If you’re not a City Member, sign up for the Third Rail ($30, all memberships will be rolled into 2022 for free) and buy a TR ticket (and guest ticket too if you like) going online tomorrow ($10 each). Total is cheaper than a non-City Member away ticket to Portland ($58).

There will be enough match tickets for everyone. Most importantly, book flights now.

This may be a dumb question -- but will there be any difference between tickets bought directly from the club or from the Third Rail (section, etc)?

I'm moving this over from the Outfield thread because I unintentionally jumped into the Q&A solicitation:

What's the effect of having to play Away in this game--
  • We have the best Away record in MLS since 2016, but this year was below average for us. But it was not the worst NYCFC Away season, which was in 2018.
  • We just beat New England Away. The Revs lost only 2 home games all year, and one of those was Decision Day when they had clinched everything they could clinch.
  • We then beat Philly Away under unusual circumstances, but FWIW Philly only lost 3 home games all year, and we also won one of those.
  • Portland lost 4 home games this year, which is still pretty good, and depending on whether you count Wins, PPG, or Losses, they were arguably the best home team in the Western conference. Their 11 Home wins led the conference.
  • NYCFC has as many Away playoff wins this year than they had any playoff round wins every previous year combined.
  • All time, Home teams are 8-2 in MLS Cup. Before 2012 the Cup was in a predetermined site. In 2011 it was in LA and the Galaxy played so I counted that. The 2 Away wins were 2015 and 2016 Portland and Seattle. In 2015, Portland ended a 4-game Home win streak. Home teams are currently on a 4-game MLS Cup win streak.
  • Besides the Home advantage, all these Home team were better during the regular season so it makes sense the MLS home advantage is more than the regular season advantage (though it's hard to compare given ties/no ties). The range of differentials is big, from 0 to 18. But on average when the Home team won the advantage was 8.5 When Away teams won their season point deficits were 0 and 5. Ours is 4.
  • NYCFC is tied with Toronto for most Away wins won to reach MLS Cup. Toronto did it in 2019 and lost to Seattle. Before 2019 most years featured an initial 1-game Knockout round then 2-legged ties, so there were fewer opportunities for Away wins. But Houston won an Away KO game before reaching the MLS Cup game in 2012, as did Portland in 2018.
I rather be home, but I like our chances as much as any Away team could have.

How? Just do what we've done since Gudi made his free kick in Atlanta. Play our game, control midfield, avoid mistakes in the back, be disciplined, and maybe not get a Red card?

Recency bias by the analysts. This team, when the proper players are on the pitch, is a juggernaut when Taty plays.

Game changed today with ISI. Medina can’t scrap out a game. Sorry.

Hard agree. Isi's movement changed everything.

That noted, I believe I still prefer starting Medina in the final. His defensive positioning is usually solid, and it is better to know early if it is one of his "good" days. If it is a good day, let it ride. If not - and it often is not - it affords a clear substitution opportunity with multiple bench options.
