MLS - June 26 - Philadelphia (Away)

Circling the coach change discussion back to NYFC, it's too short a sample to tell whether we're seeing
  • disruption to the chemistry of a well-oiled group
  • a new coach screwing up
  • random fluctuations in results and play, or
  • a team that has scored 0 or 1 goals 14 times in all competitions this season just giving us more of the same.
Seriously. I mean, Nick just decided how he wants to dress on the sideline (I knew it was going to be athletic casual instead of business casual LOL).

All kidding aside, we weren't very good for Ronny's last few games, either. We got by okay, but we were laboring already. Let's give the man a little time.

The fouls to yellow cards ratio was abysmal. And that’s a handball for me at the very end. Referee atrocious. Do I think we deserved a win, no. A tie, yes. A fluke Philadelphia goal would have canceled out a fluke second handball penalty for us.

I'm aware of that. Hopefully he's changed his mind. The formula for beating us is pretty obvious now (it's also exactly how Philadelphia plays). If we keep it up we're going to be a team playing very attractive, but losing, football.

So, we'll see. But I have to be honest, I'll be very worried if we come out in a 4-2-3-1 again. Everyone knows they just have to pack the box and choke off any close-range attacks and then wait for an opportunity to counter. (It possibly would be okay if we took more mid- and long-range shots, but other than Keaton no one seems to do it.)
Credit where due. You nailed this one.

Were our two goals because Johnson feet were in cement?

The second one was a deflection that changed the entire direction from where the ball was going. He had no chance to stop that one after the deflection. He thought it was going to his right, then it went to his left. The first one had such laughable defending, I struggle to blame Johnson. Especially when he stopped so many top chances.

I wasn't the only one, unfortunately. Which means Nick must obviously know it too. The question is how to fix it.

I'm sure he has some ideas (don't we all LOL), and I'm sure having all our starters fit and in form at the same would solve a lot all by itself. Personally, I can't wait to see how we look with Boom, Callens and Thiago Martins all healthy and ready to go 90 minutes. Look out. Different team.

But for now he has to come up with a new wrinkle or two.

Pretty sure it's the last one, because we've not been really scoring too much over the last period of time (including when Ronny was coach)... I doubt if Ronny was still here the results from the last three games would be very different.

Finally saw the video of the trainer getting a red card. Seems pretty Bush league to me even if it is funny. Why is it that MLS likes to highlight these bush league tendencies on the website? Seems unprofessional on the part of the league. The other example I can think of is the PK shootout against Orlando in the USOC where fans jumped into a previously closed off section taking away an advantage. Not saying it only happens to us but it has happened now at least twice.

And maybe playing two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference on the road, with playstyles that NYCFC has historically struggled against, has something to do with it.

I am willing to take full blame for this one. Was driving through Illinois yesterday and unable to watch the game until we stopped for food.

When I finally got it on, I was like "oh wow, we tied it". And then a minute later, the go-ahead goal. And then shortly after, the hand ball not called in the box.

*Also regarding the handball. I am both in the camp that NYCFC deserved and did not deserve a penalty there. It's absolutely a handball in the box and we've seen many similar plays such as that have penalties given. I don't know how that isn't called. That is why NYCFC deserved a penalty.

It also was not really a threatening play at all and not sure there was a dangerous chance that would have occurred if the hand ball infraction didn't occur. And that is why I also say that NYCFC didn't deserve a penalty there. Does that infraction really equate to a ~0.75 xG chance?

I think my first "NYCFC deserved it" is me saying a penalty kick should have been called under the current rules. The second "NYCFC didn't deserve it" is moreso commentary on how penalty kicks are awarded and the massive goal scoring chance they provide often times for plays that are not providing much of a goal scoring chance.

I totally agree, for some reason I expected someone on the broadcast to say it was unacceptable that a staff member put their hands on a player. To me that seems like one of those red lines that should never be crossed. Instead, they almost celebrated it, in the post-game they were laughing saying the trainer is a good guy to have on your side and everyone should buy him beers. I also don't understand how a trainer pushes our player and the only card given to a player after the whole thing is to Taty.

True, but this has to go both ways. Taty pushed the trainer before the incident really flared up. He earned the yellow.

And 6 of our next 9 are on the road, and that's not even the hardest stretch of our remaining schedule based on H/A PPG.

NYCFC has had the easiest schedule in the league to date. Fortunately the remaining schedule is middle of the pack for difficulty. But it's much harder than what the schedule was before the long break. It's going to be an unfair test for Nick to compare before and after results.

This is actually probably the best banner dig any opposing team/fan has had so far. And they did it after winning instead of before the game.

I dunno I kind of feel like if my team's never won anything I'd keep my mouth shut about the team that did win a championship but Oh there banner is small.
