MLS - June 26 - Philadelphia (Away)

You can blame lots of players for our loss yesterday, Johnson is not one of them.
Agreed. He had no chance on the deflection at the end. The first goal was savable but not easy. I do think he has a weakness for shots sent low and just a couple of feet to either side. But also to be fair that shot was taken from 5-6 yards from goal and Sean came out a couple yards himself and tried to make himself big. That's probably the right move but if the ball doesn't hit you there is basically no time to react. He was amazing the rest of the game.

I am willing to take full blame for this one. Was driving through Illinois yesterday and unable to watch the game until we stopped for food.

When I finally got it on, I was like "oh wow, we tied it". And then a minute later, the go-ahead goal. And then shortly after, the hand ball not called in the box.

*Also regarding the handball. I am both in the camp that NYCFC deserved and did not deserve a penalty there. It's absolutely a handball in the box and we've seen many similar plays such as that have penalties given. I don't know how that isn't called. That is why NYCFC deserved a penalty.

It also was not really a threatening play at all and not sure there was a dangerous chance that would have occurred if the hand ball infraction didn't occur. And that is why I also say that NYCFC didn't deserve a penalty there. Does that infraction really equate to a ~0.75 xG chance?

I think my first "NYCFC deserved it" is me saying a penalty kick should have been called under the current rules. The second "NYCFC didn't deserve it" is moreso commentary on how penalty kicks are awarded and the massive goal scoring chance they provide often times for plays that are not providing much of a goal scoring chance.
I thought you could plausibly believe that the NYCFC player behind him (Taty?) caused his arm to move. Or maybe it didn't. But I have no problem with the call, especially as we created close to nothing by way of chances outside of the other PK, which, though 100% correct, was also pretty much a gift.
Of course one call has nothing to do with the other, but if we scored 2 goals on inadvertent, though legitimate handballs, I'd consider the win extremely lucky. The result was fair, even if the ref screwed up.

And 6 of our next 9 are on the road, and that's not even the hardest stretch of our remaining schedule based on H/A PPG.

NYCFC has had the easiest schedule in the league to date. Fortunately the remaining schedule is middle of the pack for difficulty. But it's much harder than what the schedule was before the long break. It's going to be an unfair test for Nick to compare before and after results.

I think MLS is weird. With the schedule and the degree of parity etc. We tend to panic as if it's a standard European league where you can't afford a bad stretch. Citeh go through a month long slump and they are not going to win the title. In MLS even the best teams go through rough patches and end up with records that would not win anything in Europe. It still sucks and is no fun while your going though the rough patch but there's no need to panic yet IMO.

I dunno I kind of feel like if my team's never won anything I'd keep my mouth shut about the team that did win a championship but Oh there banner is small.
I mean, they did win the supporter's shield.

Either way, I think people here are getting way too butthurt about the small banner digs. I find them hilarious, even from atlanta and philly, they're just really funny because I can see the humorous side of things.

it's a "we can make fun of it, but YOU CAN'T" kinda thing. haha.

I think the banner digs are fine. but they're getting pretty old, pretty quickly.

My only complaint about the small banner digs is we are approaching small-pitch-dig repetitiveness. Also, if anybody but a Union fan had made the Mickey/NYCFC shield I probably don't bother to clap back. I can be a bit harsh on people here for "we lost but it was unfair" complaints. Fans of other teams who send that crap back at us can suck it. They played the game. Rules were enforced. Boo hoo.

On the second one, I think Taty is holding his arm and that's why his hand is in the spot it's in. I don't think you can call that a handball.

This is not true. Taty was not holding his arm. Taty had his hand on the defender's torso and nudged him in a direction AWAY from the ball. Defender, in trying to get toward the ball, reached his leg out. Perhaps in trying to maintain his balance, his arm stretched out and in doing so, his fingers contacted the ball. It is a clear handball by the law. Why the ref thought in any instance his arm/hand was TUCKED (what he was motioning after) is beyond me. Soft handball? sure. But they are given. Did we get robbed cause of this? Yes and no. I think as a call, it could go either way due to how soft it is.

I thought the burke foul on anton before philly's second goal was more egregious. It was in the same phase of play. Goal should have been disallowed.

Game of two halves that ended in a chaotic manner. Cushing made the subs he needed to at the half, looked so much better with Tinny on the right side again. Damn, I forgot how nice it is to have a functional RB who can be an immediate threat. Hope Gray is able to learn a few things from Tinny now that they're both healthy.

First half was tough to watch. 2nd half was so much more entertaining, even if it did end in a shitty and unlucky manner.

Don't have as much faith in Chanot, but it must be something to try and get used to wearing that mask again and after losing sight in one's eye. He hasn't been up to his standard, but I'm not sure if it is re-acclimating post injury or if this is his level from here on out. Only signing one CB earlier this season has caught up with us. Vuk isn't a good backup and I think Chanot may be regressing. Callens is still a beast and it seems like Thiago Martins is starting to get comfortable, but after them it's getting iffy.

Next few weeks will be interesting. As the team stands currently, I think we can expect a top3-4 finish. If we lose Taty I can definitely see us making the playoffs but probably as a 5-6 seed.

Armando Villareal just letting everything go in the final moments like he did in MLS Cup. I'm still fucking pissed about this match.

if Philly wants to asterisk our mls cup we have to asterisk their supporters shield because it was achieved in a season where the entire schedule wasn’t played (2020 Covid).

frankly I don’t care about the asterisks. They won the shield and we won the cup, let’s move on. NYCFC has to figure out how to beat PHL (or RBNJ) if they meet in the playoffs.

The thing is the Shield is debatably important whereas MLS cup isn't.

no smiles for philly

What made it a penalty for me is the fact that he essentially knocked the ball right down to his foot for a clearance. Goal-scoring opportunity or not, he controlled it to his advantage.

If the handball that hit Chanot at Red Bulls in stoppage time last year after video review is a handball than so was the one last night. No consistency in PRO. They make the calls based on the game with no accountability.

oh personally, i think it was a PK too. but I don't think it was a type of call that would rise to the level of "we got robbed". the problem is PRO is not consistent with how they call hand balls. sometimes these soft handballs are called and sometimes they aren't. and that's the bullshit that needs to get sorted.
