MLS - May 25 - Chicago (YS)

Which one is NYCFC? Should be pretty obvious for anyone who has watched this team.

We might be close "on points" to top of the east, but we have been pretty bad on the road and can barely score a goal to save our lives. We just happen to also defend really well this season which I think is where those extra points are coming from. It's _definitely_ not our offense though.

Cool guessing game. It is also pretty amazing (I know, game in hand, and all) that we are above Miami in the table.

exactly. while the results are everything, you can't win the league without scoring and playing consistently. we aren't consistent. and we struggle to score. I can't recall exactly but I seem to recall the points we took off teams above us were due to defending and/or gifts from the other team. we aren't tearing teams apart like we have done in the past.

The teams in the league have improved and our roster has not kept pace. Jansen is working miracles with this roster and we are extremely lucky that Haak has come into his own and Shore is a baller. I'm not sure why carizzo hasn't gotten more time as a sub for maxi, but at this point, I trust Jansen's judgement on the matter.

In the end, we aren't a team built to win. Some 1-0 wins and draws against the "top" teams doesn't change that. We've only had two multi-goal wins and yesterday's was a gift by the ref.

The thickest part of the schedule coming up will test our lack of depth and even if we survive that somehow, we'll be tattered shreds for the playoffs.

I always get annoyed with hockey fans who get annoyed when their team wins because the goaltender bailed them out. He's part of the team!

Our defense is part of the team! It's not the entertaining part that puts fans in the stands, but we are built on defense right now. It's unfortunate and doesn't really feel sustainable, but we should credit our defense for propping up our attack. It's a deeply flawed roster that doesn't seem likely to win MLS Cup, but it is a roster that has had moderate success this year with (hopefully) attacking additions coming before we head into the playoffs.

Also crazy that we haven't won on the road in years and no one seems to understand why.

I give full credit to the defense, and that's important too, but you can see from the way we are playing that if we DO go behind (because defenses do let up goals sometimes) it's unlikely for us to actually be able to deal with that. If you want to win MLS Cup defense is important, but we've seen time and time again the teams with the best defense make it into the playoffs and then get bounced on some oops chance and have no way to react and counter a goal or two.

In recent weeks at least the front half has looked a bit more like they know what they're doing for scoring and shooting, but there're so many times we have the ball in the final third and the players just become deer in headlights.

On the penalty, I think the ref got that call half right.

I think it was a foul in the box. Yes, the defender put his foot on the ball and sent it behind Ojeda. But he also continued through Ojeda, catching him on both legs and spinning him to the ground. It was not incidental contact. He knocked him down hard and prevented him from contesting for the loose ball.

However, once the defender had knocked the ball loose, I don’t think a yellow was warranted. It certainly was no longer DOGSO. While a yellow card can’t be the reason a VAR intervenes, once the referee is at the monitor, everything is up for grabs. So, I think he should have upheld the penalty, but overturned the yellow.
