MLS Officiating

Interesting read. Very surprised at the attrition PRO has suffered to its ranks; I find it hard to believe that there aren't more referees in the US that aspire to work MLS games. Is the compensation that bad? And I'm curious what the standards are for their hire in the first place - are there refs in the country working college/NASL/USL that are more competent but not getting hired?

Really interesting article about PRO (Professional Refereeing Organization) and what they are doing to raise the level of officiating in MLS. Interestingly, the call that forms the core of the article is the one where the official did not call a penalty on us early in the first Chicago game.

Lol damnit, I didn't see you posted this here already. I put it in the officiating NYC v. Chicago thread. Sorry for the redundancy. Definitely an interesting article. Kind of indirectly making the case for instant replay..

id say yes...i mean only England ( as far as i know) has referees as full time positions. every where else its a part time thing. if the salaries for MLS players is considered low i can only imagine what refs get.

Lalas just went on a halftime hot take about how the refs in MLS aren't that bad and he likes talking about them every week.

I could almost hear his internal monologue gleefully imagining how many tweets he's going to get tonight.

LOL and then Orlando loses their shit due to a missed red on NJRB and redbulls score 3 in like 10 minutes. I think the refs were deliberately trying to prove lalas wrong.

For the most part there is way too much whining about officiating in MLS.

The entire league plays with the same refs. Sometimes you're on the good end of a call and sometimes you're on the bad end.

It's a wash.

Another Sunday afternoon match broadcast nationally ruined by officiating. Holy cow if I were a SKC fan I would have smashed my tv screen.
Insane no call.

The only thing I can imagine the ref was thinking is that the defender did get a reasonable touch on the ball before following through into Dwyer. Even with that, it's a tough no call.

On the Orlando-RB call, it was a clear foul, but I think it was neither a penalty nor a red. The foul was outside the box, and it's not obvious to me that Larin can get to the ball before it reaches the goalie. You have to remember the first "O" in "DOGSO" - "Obvious" - it has to be obvious that Larin was going to get onto the end of the pass, and I don't think it was.

refs are shit all over the world this is nothing new....all you can do is have them do some sort of weekly referee sessions and stuff to improve their skill but that only works if the refs are full time which i dont think thats the case. OR you can have a few press members ask them questions about their officiating...but that aint happening.

as long as humans are refs this will always happen
