Mls To Increase Tam And Homegrown Spending

I have to think there is a way to use TAM on Mix if that's what we want to do. We clearly can't use a combination of TAM and GAM in the same year, but we could "re-sign" him or take some other action that would allow us to use TAM.

It's a choice between putting the best players in the 5-7 spots on our roster vs. spreading more money around the spots below #7 in an effort to improve things more broadly.

Using TAM on Mix means we would have some TAM available for another player - probably between $200K and $500K, depending upon whether we pay down Mix's salary to the league max (≈ $450K) or the TAM minimum ($150K). That would allow us to sign another solid player or two in the $500K to $900K range. Plus, we'd have the GAM money to spread around and upgrade the rest of the roster.

Using GAM on Mix means we'd have the full $800K to spend on "TAM Players" - which would get us 2-3 guys in the $500K to $1M range, but we wouldn't have that GAM to shore up the positions below #7.

I think you use the TAM for what it is - found money. Mix's salary is already handled. We should spend the money on 2 500k+ players in the CB and LB roles.

We have 1.4 million in TAM and north of 500k in Gam

It's 800k this year and 800k next year. The news to me is the 500k of GAM (which is being used to buy down Mix already).

Looking for the tweet form Christian Araos

He means this year

I have to think this is wrong, how could we possibly have $1.3?

We got $500k at the beginning of last season, with $100k expiring each year. So we have $400k left.

We just got $800k for this season, and $800k for next season.

I get up to $1.2 for this season, $2 overall.

Throwing a wrench into this is the trade we made with LA last year for an international spot. We gave up allocation money for that. I thought it was reported as TAM at the time.

I think we have to wait to see what happens because all the numbers being reported seem to be assumed.

TAM? GAM? where is the WTF allotment of cash....all these rules keep confusing me....so can or can we not use the 1 million plus to get a couple of good international defenders or something instead of using it all on mix

I actually don't think they're as complicated as they sound at first glance.
  • Salary budget of $3.66 million (edit: for team's 20 highest paid players).
  • Players paid under $457,500 cost their salary against the budget.
  • Players paid over $457,500 cost $457,500 against the budget, of which teams are allowed 3, with the following exception:
    • Additional players paid over $457,500 can have their salaries reduced on the books via targeted allocation money (TAM) or general allocation money (GAM), but not both at the same time.
  • TAM can only be used to reduce the salary of a player signing a new contract from above $457,500 to below that number.
    • Each team has $800k in TAM per year, plus up to an additional $400k to be used all at once or $100k per year.
  • GAM can be used to reduce the salary of any player on the book at any time.
    • Each team gets around $100k-250k GAM each year, depending on where they finish and if they won trophies, and can be stockpiled and used whenever.
That's as simple as I can put it, and with the rewrite of the TAM rules as to when it can be applied, this simplification is still 95% accurate. (The extra 5% of nuance would double the length of the explanation.)

Finally, to answer your question, we don't appear to be able to use TAM on Mix (because of the bolded line above), until we re-sign him. However, we can use GAM, of which we should have enough. In addition, we can use our TAM for any new signings this year that cost over $457,500.

Hopefully that helps and isn't just a rehash of what you already know.

Maybe. If I have this right here's how I understand things. There's a maximum allowed salary of I think $475,000 per player, and a salary cap that the total salaries of the first 20 players (out of 28) on your team can't exceed. You can have three designated players (DP) however whose salaries are essentially unlimited (they count as that $475k max against the cap). You have targeted allocation money (TAM) to "lower" another player's salary (who gets between $1 million and $1/2 million) to the max allowed. Then you have general allocation money (GAM) that you can use to lower other players' salaries so your total spend remains under the cap.

Only the first 20 players' salaries count towards the salary cap. Also note that you can have only 10 international players out of your 28 (slightly different in Canada).

Corrections welcomed, but I think that's more or less the basics of it.

TAM can lower a players salary down to 150k.
