http://nypost.com/2017/07/19/the-options-nycfc-is-exploring-for-a-close-to-home-jv-team/Whether or not [LIRR's Suffolk County stadium] happens, Reyna predicted NYCFC would have a second team operation of some sort by 2019.
“In 2019, we’ll have a crop of kids that are going to need to be consistent with our philosophy by playing against older players to be challenged,” Reyna said. “That’s when we’re going to need to have a USL team that’s closer to use [where] we can manage on the technical side.”
From sundance's link:
One local option could be the Long Island Rough Riders, an NYCFC affiliate currently in the Premier Development League. The Rough Riders, who are seeking to become a USL team, announced in December that they want to build a 5,000-seat soccer stadium at Suffolk County Community College’s Brentwood campus on Long Island.
It just makes perfect sense for the Rough Riders to be our affiliate. Let's hope we can pull it off. This is becoming a more critical area of need.
I agree that there are real advantages, but it always felt to me that if you want to run an effective B-team, especially for a group like CFG who like to focus on philosophy, that the most sensible option is to an an owner-operator rather than just affiliating. There's too much likelihood of the relationship ending after a few years when you just affiliate.
That's a really good point. Of course, they could always just buy control too.
That's one thing I never did figure out about Atlanta. Why not take over the Silverbacks. Good tradition and a fucking great name.
Could it be that the Silverbacks simply weren't interested in selling?
Silverbacks any better? All of the gorillas in the mean jungles of Georgia?Could be, but I always got the sense that Arthur Blank wanted to start from scratch. I just hate Atlanta United - stupid and derivative.
I think the LI Ducks should be a good indicator that a USL team could be very successful in Suffolk County. They play in Central Islip which is the town next to Brentwood. They averaged 5,265/game in 2016 with a stadium capacity of 6,002. That's fantastic for an independent minor team.
Stony Brook is also DI and averaged 7,268 a game last season in FCS and 3,425 in basketball.
The thing love about the Rough Riders is the history. This is an organization that has produced multiple USMNT players. There's a lot of talent on Long Island and cementing a relationship with the Rough Riders would be big for keeping it blue.

Tradition and Original, but great branding? It was named after a specific gorilla from the Atlanta Zoo. There is tradition too, and it is completely original.
I believe an eventual 2 squad is intended for north of the Bronx
