It's extremely rare for players of that age to play up a level.
Normally yes, but Gio isn't a normal player, and this summer Josh sargent was tapped up to the U-20s and shined, so there is precedent. I'd venture that the coach simply didn't want to bring a new face in and mess with the continuity.

I'm saying it's rare for a u15 to play with the u17s no matter who the player is because players are at a different stage in terms of maturity. There's a difference between going from u15 to u17 and u17 to u20.

I'm not disagreeing that it's rare, but Gio has already proven he can hold his own against older competition, and he's been doing it for years.

Adu played for the U17 when he was 13/14 and for the U20 when he was 14/15-20yo (granted, he may have been 20 when playing the 17's) and he more than held his own, and yet Gio has more panache and composure than Adu ever had.

It would have been nice to see him play in it, but I'd rather he not get the extra notoriety with every scout present at the Cup. If there is even a chance of signing him to a HG contract, it would be out the window when he shined in the tourney.

True, but Gio has been playing with the U19's as of late, right? I know not all of them are national team caliber, but I thought he would get a callup

While I'm glad the family moved to DC for traffic concerns for midtown Manhattan. He actually was born in New York and went to Columbia Grammar until this academic year, so we are missing out at a potential homegrown signing here...

lol wow really? well president did play in HS i believe.

I wonder if he tried out or they said you are taking him because president said so.

Not a big fan of the president but there will sadly be protestors at the game tomorrow. Just leave the kid alone.

I watched him play at a tournament in March. Shockingly, he plays on the left.

I won't comment on an 11-year old's playing ability, but he was the tallest player on the field by at least 6 inches and I thought it was interesting that he was playing up a year, but in a low division. Normally you only play up when you're really good. Only the nuttiest of soccer parents will have their kid play up a year in a low division. So there's that.

The game was at Prospect Park and there were lots of black vans and 30-something guys in totally casual outfits, baseball hats and ear pieces.

Holy crap. I just realized that he's playing on DC United's U12 Academy team. That is hilarious.

It's sad that some deserving kid got bumped for him.
