NYCFC Academy - General Discussion

USL please. Has to happen.
Need to get these boys some real professional match time.

Owusu, J. Sands, Scally, Haak, Petrovic (whatever his name is) and maybe the left back are all ready for the next step.

I actually don’t know if Gio is, which probably means he needs the possibility of finding out. A few sink or swim games every few weeks until he claimed a spot would be ideal.

I’m happy he’s going to Dortmund, except there’s every chance that he’s more likely to end up a Junior Flores than a Pulisic. If that happens, I’ll be very sad.

Someone said Reyna told him not till 2020, so these kids have to join the senior team for the next couple of years. Let's hope Dome is willing to play them. We sure no PV liked to let them rot on the bench.

Earlier this year (in March) there was a New York post article quoting him as saying it would be in 2019. Can’t find the link, but I think it’ll be soon. In the meantime, we could still possibly send the kids to San Antonio or one of the more local teams. Do it for a year and a half and it might be enough for the affiliate to invest the time in them.

It was sundance sundance:
I asked Claudio after the game when we would have a USL team. He told me 2020. Said that it’s a big cost, and there have been a lot of moving pieces with the league—D2/D3, etc. But said emphatically that “we really, really want it.”

I distresses me somewhat that Reyna even mentioned the cost.

maybe that new USL D3 is a better option? i mean Toronto II is going to play there an dallas as well. the issue i think with cost is the location, where will they play?

It's still a business. The worth needs to justify the cost no matter the size. It would be worrisome if the cost would justify the value but they still don't want to spend it, but I don't believe that's what he's saying. Why start a USL team next year just to populate it with 2-4 prospects and 15 veteran scrubs?

At the Round Table I attended with Patricof early this year, he mentioned the cost too. I was floored.

For an organization that has endless pockets for MCFC, they’re skimping left and right with the sleeping giant that NYC can be as both a hotbed of talent and arguably a more marketable club in the long term.

He’s not hyped. That’s what none of us understand.

And did you see the way he protected the defense? He was standing up Llanez and Alvarez all over the pitch. Those guys are rated right up there with or above Gio, and Haak managed to largely make both look mundane in any duel, while also being excellent in possession and bringing the ball forward.

If you weren’t impressed with him, then you might want to skip watching youth matches for NYC, or any national team for that matter. He was absolute class. Plays a very mature #6 game for a teenager.

I’d rather see that than some physical beast out there shoving folks off the ball and running past people.
ok. I conceded this round.

FWIW, I took the reference to cost more in the way of “it’s worth doing right the first time.” It didn’t seem like a negative to me.
It’s definitely the cost. Part of it has to do with what form of USL it’d be a part of since the upper USL has a bigger capacity stadium seating component than the lower USL.

My two cents, and it ties into my earlier criticism of the training facility, is that the easy solution is to put up stands around the field at the TF, but...... and this is a huge but, they only built one pitch tablet at the TF, and that tablet can only handle the number of hours needed for the 1st team before the grass starts to deteriorate faster than they can maintain. Had they built a real TF “complex” with multiple tablets, they could have a dedicated “stadium venue” for the USL side. Without it, they either have to wait for the new stadium or find a different neutral venue, and in NYC that’s a bit of an issue.

So yeah, they skimped on the TF which in turn is hindering starting an in-house USL side, which is directly hindering our best academy and young-pro talent by having them rot on the bench or in street clothes. Having an awesome academy does little if there isn’t a place to step up to and get immediate minutes.

Hartford just announced an USL team. The Hartford Athletic, and they will begin play in 2019. https://www.hartfordathletic.com/. NYCFC can have a close USL team while also honoring the team's historic match at Pratt & Whitney Stadium in 2017.

It would be great if they could become our USL affiliate until we get our own NYCFC2 instead of San Antonio which has been mostly a handshake agreement and a few social media tweets every 10 months. That being said, it's up to Hartford how involved they want the relationship to be in terms of player development.

can try to take advantage of it since they are just starting, unlike San Antonio and even wilmington who were already established

Boehm: A long road ends while new ones begin at Development Academy finals

"But a PK shootout was required to break the deadlock, and NYCFC held just a bit more of their nerve, goalkeeper Johan Peñaranda saving one spot kick and his teammates netting all five of theirs. Believe it or not, some on the blue side of New York stayed up late to watch, and celebrate....
It was a harsh ending for Kleiban and his boys, and a huge achievement for Pilkington & Co., who are already helping transform NYCFC from the aging unit featured in their 2015 expansion debut into one of MLS’s most dynamic young clubs."

So do we know the ages of our players that played yesterday? Sands is the only 18 year old, right? Scally is 15, other than that, I'm not familiar with who else is significantly under the 19 age limit for this.

Absolute legend, Villa. If there was any doubt this man was one of the greatest, following him on social media helps cement this fact. Not only in his playing ability, but also his leadership, passion, and commitment. Even if he's not playing every game, and this season he's not been the same Villa from last season, having him is a privilege we should not forget in the near future after his inevitable retirement in the coming years.
