The only time my jersey got noticed was in the grocery store, and the woman asked if I worked for Etihad Airways. Didn't even understand it was a soccer jersey
This is the problem with ads on soccer jerseys. The ad is much bigger than the team's logo! So for the unknowing observer, it makes perfect sense to suppose that that's what the shirt is promoting.
John Oliver recently had a piece on the Ponzi scheme of multi-level marketing. He showed an Indian marketing video by Herbalife; and, in it, almost all the people were wearing Galaxy jerseys, which of course feature an Herbalife ad that dwarfs the Galaxy logo.
This is why there's no way that I could ever wear an NYCFC game jersey. I have several hats and a warmup jacket; the only logo on the front of any of these is the team's.
Before the first season, a guy I know (who is actually a Red Bull fan) got me a t-shirt replica of the home shirt. I was very grateful for the gesture; but, after a bit of wrestling with myself, I decided to ask him for the receipt so that I could exchange it for something I could actually wear. I wound up switching it for a t-shirt that features a large team logo front and centre.
