I just want to emphasize that Sands is a very shy person. He was originally wearing a sweatshirt over his polo so he wouldn’t stand out like the players. He was told to take it off. He was always in the corner of the room. It must be tough on him to be the first homegrown player for this club and only be 17 being a professional athlete.

The simple answer to that is the club needs to sign 1-3 more academy players so he has his entourage to hang out with.

I cannot imagine what it must feel like to be the “kid” among grown men, and expected to be their professional “equal” when you’re still figuring out life and AP calculus.... hell, even the other “teens” (sub-20) on the team have more life experience coming from other countries, or college, where they’ve been on their own.

Yeah, he’s 17 years old. Imagine you at 17 at some fancy cocktail party - you’d probably feel awkward too. Shame that Cavani and the other academy kids couldn’t attend to at least give him a group to feel more comfortable.

I think the most important thing I learned tonight was that Claudio Reyna personally told me that we wouldn't be signing a player like Fernando Torres during this summer even on a free transfer, when I asked him about it. Because guys like that won't take a level of salary that can be paid down below the DP line.

Well, gosh darn that sucks.

Maybe Khedira would be nice enough to take a pay cut for some bricks of Sheik Mansour gold.

That conversation you had with Reyna makes no sense (what he said), because any cap/salary guy worth a damn can figure out how to structure a contract (and MLS would work with the parties involved to get quality like Torres) so that this year/half-year is a Buy-down salary and next year and onward is a “real” DP salary (uncapped and appropriate to skill). This is Villa’s last year of his contract, so Torres could assume it next year, or Maxi could be turned into an expensive TAM player by using the extra discretionary TAM while allowing Torres to assume his DP spot. Or MLS could add a 4th DP (charging teams half-mil or more for the rights to it) and there’s no more issue (they’ve created stuff for LA countless times on a whim and access to a “special” player).

I hope Reyna just didn’t want to tip his hand, because if he was serious then the club isn’t utilizing all of their options.
