Nycfc V Dc Postgame

Anyone else besides me notice that because he was taking his shirt off he nearly clanged his head into the support pole behind the goal?
Yes. And I nearly faint watching it on replay even though I knew he doesn't crash into it and break his collarbone. Good thing that happened on the end away from me. The paramedics would have had hell carrying a passed out fat guy all the way up from the first row.

I thought he was going to pull a Chad Barrett and injury himself celebrating. And that would have been bad

Just watched that clip another 20 or so times.

That is unquestionably one of the best passes I've ever seen.

Notice there is a split second after the pass is made before Villa starts his run. I have three theories.
1. Even he can't believe Pirlo would attempt that pass.
2. He is checking the line judge to see if he is back onside.
3. He is cagily giving the defense a moment to mask that he was not back onside yet.

Don't know.

Regardless, his touch and finish from within a CB sandwich of pressure was also perfect.

Had Pirlo's pass been anywhere else, it doesn't work. Had either of Villa's touches been anything else, it doesn't work.

Both sublime. I'm going back to watch another 20 times.

Poku.
I don't know if this is a separate hypothesis or corollary of your first theory.

I think even David Villa didn't see the space, and Pirlo played him into the run. The weight of the ball was perfect, as Pirlo knew he had to give him time to both get back on and then run onto it.

It was magnificent, no matter. As I mentioned, I was on the other end of the field. So I guess I wouldn't have seen the Villa near crash or goal anyway, as I'd have already fainted from the beauty of that ball.

Mix played a ball that made me want to Poku at some point in the first half, and whomever was the recipient (I can't recall) Lamparded the hell out of it. I think it was Tommy, maybe.

It's fairly obvious Poku, Pirlo, Mix, Angelino, Facey and DV operate at a level of tactical acumen foreign to others on the squad (not that the listed players are all the same respective levels, but at least one level above the rest of the team). That level is known as competence. Iraola is getting there. Tommy is at least lifted by the better players and moves around a lot, which is a damn sight more than the static presence of The Ned.

I credited Kreis in one of my drunken post game ramblings for having Allen basically demonstrate what he wanted out of the spot and then bringing on the talent (basically, just ignore the fact that Jacobsen is worthless at getting into space and play like he is where he ought to be even though he never is).

It's so obvious to us all that Mix needs to take Jacobsen's spot. Whether or not Kreis figures it out may indeed be the determining factor of whether we make the playoffs.

I still don't really understand taking Mix off. He's never once looked fatigued to me all season. I would understand it if we had a defensive stopper or another attacking type mid, but we don't. At the time, we were level. It would have made more sense to me to get Mullins on then if you're going to take off a mid. I certainly wouldn't have put in Tian. I don't think he's ever even looked dangerous all season (on the pitch I mean, don't know if he's driving himself to 1Oak. Yes, tasteless, I know), much less sniffed a chance or actually contributed to an attack.

Seconded. I'm trying to pretend like he's managing minutes with so many August games, but Mix had most of July off with USMNT duty, and there are plenty of people who need a breather more than he does. And also not Velasquez.

With these performances I wonder if we will be without Pirlo and Villa and Mix during the next FIFA international windows in September and October. Mix and Pirlo seem to be entrenched in their respective sides and Del Bosque has said a couple of months ago that he's considering a call up for Villa so that he can get 100 caps (and that was before Villa went on a streak of more than 1 goal per game average). Our run for a playoff spot could come to a grinding halt.

Edit: just looked at the schedule and we probably wouldn't miss any of those 3 players in Sept or Oct because NYCFC's first Sept match is on the 12th and we have another 2 week break in Oct from the 2nd to the 16th. U.S. has games on Sept 4th & 8th and then Oct 10th. Italy on Sept 3rd & 6th and Oct 10th & 13th. Spain on Sept 5th & 8th and Oct 9th & 12th. I don't know if MLS is finally observing the FIFA dates in Sept and Oct for all clubs or just for us, but I'll take it!

Sad trombone. And I even had promised the wife a little Poku time today. This is so deflating.

Jeebus Kreis on a stick. This would just be too perfectly disastrous if we were to actually make a playoff run and this happened. And then there are two possible endings: (1) a miraculously healthy 373 singlehandedly carries us into the playoffs, or (2) what you'd expect.

ETA: I guess Paul's edit applies to this as well.

Check out my recent edit. We should be good to go.

I'm glad I am not the only one continually hitting replay. I keep watching to figure out how the hell Villa managed to get not one, but two touches in between the two defenders, and also how Pirlo managed the perfect placement.

But of course, in other places, people commented that it was bad defending. Can't they just appreciate the greatness that is the Maestro and El Guaje?

Also, I found it really funny that Villa took his shirt off. That is really unusual for him, and made me wonder what he was thinking that he decided to take it off

He was probably thinking something along the lines of holy shit that worked.

Guys, we gotta get David the win for Goal of the Week. It's almost surely going to be a nominee. Get out in full force and VOTE (early next week). Also, YES just plugged the Wednesday game vs. Columbus, with Villa's back and outstretched arms, and Pirlo and Lamps looking fierce at the camera. Lampard is questionable with eye strain.

We should also vote Bobby Boswell (a defender) for save of the week. It was such a good save that there was already a smoke bomb set off in left field when Villa struck it.

The game actually featured three goal line saves by defenders - that has to be incredibly rare.

It's pretty cool to see how happy Pirlo gets when Poku does something good. He's a big believer and supporter of his already. We got him for another 2 years after this season. Got to keep Poku and Mix on the pitch with him as much as possible. They will become such better players with him around. Now where the hell is Shelton, I'm salivating thinking about him making runs and Pirlo dropping the ball at his feet. He'll probably miss the goal, but still.

Isn't it funny that when Tony Meola, of former MetroStars/Red Bulls fame, is in the booth for YES, that NYCFC beats DC. Finally he sees DC lose.

I think CFG is going to have to decide in two years what they want to do with Poku and Mix. They're both going to be around the same pay grade at that point, and I hope NYC shells out enough to keep them both here and both happy.

I don't know, but it. Also kind of ruins the effect if your undershirt is the same color as your jersey.

Yeah, but at least his shirt didn't say something dumb like Balotelli's always do.
