I disagree with you. But let's say you are right...how about this:

-----Striker-----
Villa - Mix - Ruiz
Jacobson - Lampard
LB - CB - CB - RB
-----Saunders----

And in that scenario he does play the box to box role that you think he can still play.

Personally, let's let him play the CAM - let him slot in behind the striker and not have to run all over the entire pitch.
I think Lampard is used best as a CAM like you said. The guy is 36 now, i'm not too keen on the idea of having him run up and down the entire pitch all game every week.

Fuck dude. You keep on with this "Lampard is good. Must be 10 for us."

I just don't see it as being that easy. Dude has spent over 30 years NOT being a CAM. You gonna slap a position modifier on him and roll with it?

Mark Halstis future in Malmo FF is highly uncertain. The midfielder sitting on an outgoing contract with the club and as reported to FotbollDirekt.se is Halsti current for New York City FC, the newly launched MLS club with the likes of Frank Lampard and David Villa in the team.
Over the past few seasons, Markus Halsti been a key player in Malmo FF. The Central midfielder, who can also play defender, has made a total of 115 games in the league and also the 16 matches in the Champions League context.
But the 30-year-old's contract with the MFF is outgoing and than Halsti has not accepted the extension that the sky has offered him. Interest from other clubs are in addition to the Finnish landslagsmannen.
There has been talk of a move home to HJK Helsinki for Halsti, but it is not up to date. Malmö is the midfielder's choice if there will be games in Scandinavia.
According to information FotbollDirekt.se can now Halsti come to move across the Atlantic, for playing in the MLS. One of the clubs who have inquired about the 30-year-old is namely New York City FC.A move to the big city club's current for Halsti.
The club was formed in May 2013 and is owned by the Premier League club Manchester City and baseball giants New York Yankees. It will next year make his debut season in the MLS, and thus has still not played a single match.
New York City's squad currently consists of only six players, but two of them have impressive CVs. It's midfielder Frank Lampard, 36, icon of Chelsea and now on loan to Manchester City - and striker David Villa, 32, formerly target gun in Valencia and Barcelona.
2015, we can see a central midfield in New York City consisting of Frank Lampard and Markus Halsti. Far from impossible it anyway.
New York City will play their home games at the New York Yankees home stadium, the classic baseball stadium Yankee Stadium.
FotbollDirekt.se have searched Markus Halsti and MFF's sporting director Daniel Andersson without success.

@Midas Mulligan find me the formation where he and Jacobson fit that isn't a 4-2-3-1

You say he won't play RM. Fine. You agree he isn't a box to box player in a 4-2-3-1 fine. Is Jacobson not playing?

Halsti, from what I can tell, is out of
Contract now and was on 7k/week wages (Euro). Let's say that's roughly 500k per year.

He played primarily as a Central Midfielder and a CDM although I've seen him listed as a CB.

If this is true, maybe he slots in under the Cap as a CDM with Jacobson.

He has UCL experience too.

I don't see how Lampard doesn't play at least at the top of a midfield triangle. Even Jermaine Jones plays higher up for the Revs than he did in Germany or for the US. You don't waste DPs in MLS in the defensive half. You don't need it. The ball flies through the midfield, no one plays the possession game. You need to make the most of your attack with DPs. Ergo, why Kreis and Reyna are targeting more offense with DP3. MLS is different than BPL

RSL plays the possession game and guess who installed it there? Jason Kreis

In Lampard's age, he needs people behind him AND in front of him. That's why I'm leaning more and more towards a 4-3-3. He can have two midfield partners, one expected to be the true CAM and #10, and one acting as a true CDM. Lampard can play forward a bit, but doesn't need to be expected to make runs all game and get tired out. I think the 3rd DP should be a center forward or CAM, not a winger or CDM. Something like this:

Code:
--Villa-----------Donyoh?-
-----------DP#3-----------
--------------------------
----Lampard------???------
--------------------------
---------Jacobson---------
--------------------------
-Brovsky------------???---
----W.Siriboe---???-------
--------------------------
---------Saunders---------

I'd prefer Dunn to not be in that starting lineup, though he could potentially play any one of the three midfield spots.

Great possession formation if Brovsky and the other full back step up in support. Also quick to counter.

Beckham spent almost his entire career on the wing but played as a CDM for the Galaxy. Henry played as a striker for most of his career and ended it with the NYRB as a number 10.

Good players should be able to adapt to different roles later in their careers to make up for the inevitable physical decline.

4-1-3-2? Or a 4-1-2-3 with a False 9? Am I reading you right @sbrylski ?

4-1-2-3 with a false 9. Though admittedly, the formation is designed 100% around what I believe Lampard to be: a possession midfielder with attacking tendancies. This role is available in a flat 4-4-2, potentially a 4-2-3-1 if you start him as a DM and allow him to push forward, and the 4-3-3 with a false nine.

I liked what Eckersley brought at the end of the year. But he would be an international player.

I don't know how this works in MLS, but it looks like NYRB is just dumping people left and right.
