Yeah, the stigma about American coaches or ones that were developed in the landscape is another thing

Yes -- most MLS teams are hiring coaches with MLS experience. Most of these coaches are MLS lifers so they never have to worry about a guy leaving early. We hire from anywhere in the world, so our job is a pit-stop.

We won a title three seasons ago and have made multiple conference finals, so I don't think our strategy is wrong or failing.

We've done extraordinarily well considering the fact we've been a vagabond outfit from Day One. And it's worth considering how hard it is to coach in our kind of environment, with multiple home pitches and a schedule often dictated by the landlords and their season schedules.

It ain't for everybody.

In any event, we want to be coached by someone who is in demand in European leagues, or potentially so, even if it means we can't hang on to them for more than a couple years. I'd much rather have that kind of talent on the touchline than someone who just paints by the numbers year in and year out and is just successful enough.

I've long thought that we've had the hardest road to a championship in MLS because of what you said. It's honestly remarkable we've been as consistently good as we've been over the years, and it's what makes me the most excited about the new stadium. When you take all those variables out, I'm so pumped to see what happens.

I absolutely think he's coming here because he thinks it puts him in line to be a potential Pep replacement in Manchester. If he's successful here, I'd be surprised if he was still our coach when we open the stadium in 2027.

i mean, he may think that. but i dont think he will be considered for that job. whoever is going to replace pep will have to be a known name. like worldwide name. even if he wins title here he wont be in the running. BUT i do see him being added to the new coaching staff and be an assistant if he does well here.

From the article it sounds like at AZ he played a true 4-3-3 with a midfield consisting of a deep-lying DM, a true box-to-box CM, and another more attacking CM that made deep runs from midfield. If this is his usual system it doesn't sound like it has a CAM. Assuming he sticks with this is Santi a LW then? Can Santi play the attacking CM role? If we are running a 3 man midfield, we will need some serious midfield depth.

The stats on MLS teams losing coaches who quit midseason are:

NYCFC 2
Red Bulls 1
Rest of MLS combined 0

It's not how it works.
It's possible I'm missing somebody somewhere but it's absolutely not the norm, except for the teams owned by foreign soccer conglomerates.

If another team with a bigger profile wants that coach, they’ll go to the bigger club.

Don't forget one big reason why more MLS coaches don't move overseas: the ridiculous regulations that make it so hard to get a European coaching license. Remember what Jesse Marsch had to go through in order to get licensed in Europe? Including missing time during the MLS season to get "training"?

Since we hire through the CFG network, we tend to get coaches already qualified in Europe, so it's easy for them to move back (or back and forth). We aren't the only ones who have a European coach, but many of the others have hired someone with a real connection to the USA and who seem happy to stick around (e.g. Neville, Martino, Heath).

It's just really hard for a domestic coach to get qualified overseas.

Feel free to quote me on this in a few months, but I'm willing to give the guy a full season to work the team.
I'd love an Arne Slot-like "come in, win" situation, but Slot also went into liverpool with a team that was already amazing and the players were raring to go.

I think like with some of our other coaches it'll take some time for our players to get used to his system, and therefore I'm okay with taking it slow this season as much as I'd like to win everything.

The only thing I'd like to see almost immediately is a return to fun-to-watch soccer. It was missing under Cushing for large parts, I felt like I was sitting at games half the time wondering when it'll end because it's been nothing happening. With Dome/Vieira and some parts of Ronny era, we had this super fun passing / crossing system that was engaging to watch, I felt it was gone during Cushing-era.

Based on the articles above, I think we get that. Regardless of results at the start, if we have that I'll be happy.

IMO he deserves a lot of leeway, the roster has massive issues and it just got worse with the departure of Sands. Maxi might be back but even if he is it would take a miracle for him to play as much as he did and at the level he played last season. Cushing sold out on defense last year in an attempt to score goals and we still struggled to score outside of some unworldly finishing by Martinez, that has just as much to do with our players as it does with the coach. Unless Wolf looks better with a full off-season of rest or the young guys make a big second-year leap, we are going to be in for another year of offensive dysfunction.

Yep. That's why my hopes for this season are to see us playing something entertaining, because that can carry on to when the players are more developed and/or we get better players into the roster.

In terms of fan impatience, Jansen's biggest issue will probably be if Martinez does not continue to score an other-worldly rate of 0.97 goals per game. Then, unless the other forwards take up the slack immediately, it will be the coach's fault. I mean, Cushing sucked and all, but at least he knew how to make Martinez score.

The new coach can have a year or more. If we don't have a replacement for Sands by the start of camp and/or Jovan shows up to camp looking out of shape and disinterested my David Lee complaints will start immediately.
