Poku Sold?

Are they doing what Orlando did and going into MLS as DB's franchise?

Nope. Straight up competition.

Poku leaving doesn't change much salary-wise, so hope it's a big transfer fee. Otherwise we're going to look pretty stupid for not trading him at the start of the season when he was still being touted as the next Yaya.

Exactly. Need to be getting $$$ that convert into GAM.

So if this Miami team or any NASL team paid a transfer fee, would that count as GAM or TAM? Would it be like when NJRB sold Miazga and the transfer fee they got they couldn't spend on players?
Sorry im not really an expert, i have only followed MLS since NYCFC was formed and i don't really understand all the allocation money stuff.

This sucks. Not About poku leaving although I feel he is a very good plAyer. We should have found a way to play him. He is valuable. What I am pissed about is the fact that we wont be receiving anything for him to help us this year via a trade. We could have gotten a player in return if we made any effort to trade him to an mls team.

edit: beaten to the tweet showing salary

I guess Miami does have the cash and yet the team failed to even make top three in NASL

The question is mix next?

Keep in mind, Miami payed a 750k transfer fee for Richie Ryan.... If they want to they could afford to buy Poku.
Richie Ryan played about a season and a half at Dundee United and was extremely underwhelming. Based on that fee I'd say Poku is worth about 5 million in comparison!

He's been solid at the NASL level but that transfer fee caught a lot of people off-guard. None the less, Miami is willing to throw money around for sure.

Should be GAM. Off the top of my head, I think we get 50% of the transfer fee in GAM up to $500k or something like that. It would be higher if he was a homegrown player.

I'm getting kind of excited. I didn't have my hopes up for much movement this summer, but if we just got a GAM windfall, that alone could fund a $300-400k annual salaried centerback acquisition. Add in the smoke about Mix departing as well, we could have $1 million to play with this summer.

EDIT: Ok, looked up the specifics:

A club shall receive two-thirds (2/3) of the corresponding transfer or loan fee revenue (including agent fees and other expenses), from any transaction involving a player that is NOT a Homegrown Player, Generation adidas Player, or player acquired via the MLS SuperDraft.

  • The club may assign up to $650,000 of the transfer/loan revenue as General Allocation Money. (In the case of Designated Players, such assignment of Allocation Money can only take place after the club has received 100% of their out-of-pocket investment)
  • The remaining balance of the club’s share (if any), and which cannot be traded, will be available to be used by clubs in the following ways:
    • Against the expenses incurred by the club in relation to the costs of an existing or new Designated Player
    • With league approval, clubs can use the revenue against an expense that would (i) would not otherwise have been incurred by the club; and (ii) reasonably represents an investment in the league or club (e.g. youth development and training facilities).

So let's say Miami FC gave us $1 million for Poku (pretty optimistic, but it's a nice round number).

We would get $666,666 from the sale, with $650,000 in GAM. The other $16,666 can go towards bringing in a new DP or paying an existing DP, or invest in the team.

The first thing I thought about when hearing Miami FC was "wasn't that the NASL team throwing tons of money around at mediocre players?"

They were pretty much ridiculed for that Ryan deal where they spent $750k for a journeyman.

Fingers crossed that NYCFC did some similar business and will get a big chunk of GAM from this. That and offloading Mix could free up a ton of money. That much allocation could solve the CB and GK problems easy and make the team a legit playoff team.

Agreed. If Reyna just turned two bench players in $1 million in money to play with, it's an amazing set of moves.

Reports are now saying $500k transfer fee, which would land $333k of GAM.

You can get a quality starter for $333k of cap space.

Also surprising given how people rated Poku that no MLS team (or lower tier European team) took a flier on him. At this rate Poku's got to kill it in NASL basically just to get an MLS contract next year. Also mentions that he got a good raise out of it which might have been a major part, remember Poku was on something ridiculous like $60k.

Me thinks Poku goes there for the remainder of the season before joining Atlanta.

I don't know....if he's getting "substantially" more than the 60k, maybe his Salary is 100k? will Atlanta be wanting to pay him that much? Plus the transfer fee from Miami ?

Salary reported to be $300k, 5x what he was making at NYCFC. If you are Reyna/Poku no way you turn down 500k in allocation/a 5x salary increase. Deal had to happen.

And as others have pointed out, if Poku kills it in NASL he's not taking a pay cut to come to MLS. Might have just priced himself out of the league. Would be more likely moving to Europe.

The ability to get new contract is probably what enabled this to happen (if Poku gets traded he's still on same salary.)

Grant Wahl is reporting $750k transfer fee.
