If it's not this one, it'll be another one. There's no way around it, no matter how much money you have, nor how loose the rules. When you're buying players, you make mistakes. In every league, every club, every where.The good news is that we did this in our infancy when we weren't going to win a title anyway. I suspect (hope) it will be a loooooong time before we hamstring ourselves with another similar contract.
This looked like a great contract at the time we put it together. Mix was looking like he would be a first 11 player for the US for the 2018 WC. We signed the golden boy no one else in MLS could get, and we didn't burn a DP spot. I thought and think that's a huge win. If you have to put in a no-trade clause, do it.
But here's what you don't do: leave him off the bench, no comment or make vague remarks about how he fits in the team, etc., etc., and then try to sell him. If you make the decision to proceed that way (or the coach makes that decision), then the FO either has to be okay with buying out the deal or else get there pretty damn quick.
