Protected Player List Announced

The good news is that we did this in our infancy when we weren't going to win a title anyway. I suspect (hope) it will be a loooooong time before we hamstring ourselves with another similar contract.
If it's not this one, it'll be another one. There's no way around it, no matter how much money you have, nor how loose the rules. When you're buying players, you make mistakes. In every league, every club, every where.

This looked like a great contract at the time we put it together. Mix was looking like he would be a first 11 player for the US for the 2018 WC. We signed the golden boy no one else in MLS could get, and we didn't burn a DP spot. I thought and think that's a huge win. If you have to put in a no-trade clause, do it.

But here's what you don't do: leave him off the bench, no comment or make vague remarks about how he fits in the team, etc., etc., and then try to sell him. If you make the decision to proceed that way (or the coach makes that decision), then the FO either has to be okay with buying out the deal or else get there pretty damn quick.

Or the FO has to override the coach and say, be a coach and figure out how to make it work.

I agree on this. They couldn't disguise his on-field product as there is video of that for prospective buyers to make what they want of it (good or bad). But as for any alleged off-field issues that may have the potential to further offend potential takers, they needed to put themselves in the best position to resolve the matter - which clearly is not by excluding and coach speak. And the longer it lingered, the more he likely became viewed as damaged goods. They needed to resolve this in a hurry, one way or another, and for whatever reason failed to do so. There was some botching here for sure.

Yeah, this has been too long of a game of chicken by the club. Because Saunder's contract needs to be moved, the Front Office isn't in the drivers seat any longer unless they're willing to tie their own hands for the next two years and pay Mix to sit while losing his Cap hit to the stands. Any trade will be on Mix' terms. It really should be turned into a training video on how not to manage personnel without first checking the language of the overriding contract.

Why do you automatically blame PV? How do you know the FO isn't calling the shots on this?
Well, I suppose we'd all like to think the FO doesn't tell Patty who to play or put in the squad. Blame goes to Mix/PV. Precise allocation of portions of that blame can, and has been, argued. The FO is definitely on the hook to clean up the mess, though.

Does that about cover it all for everyone?

Nah, let's spend four more pages on it

Im going to lock this up as it's unnecessary. Move further discussion into the Waiver/Expansion draft thread.
