Stadium Discussion

Deblasio is pushing development near broadway junction but the area is so residential, i dunno. Tough to imagine a stadium there. At the same time,I agree with neil, I dont know where else in bk they could be looking at.

I'm not familiar with the area at all. But just looking at the maps shows me it seems to be served by the J Line and the LIRR. It also looks like there could be a Metro-North connection too, but I'm easily confused when it comes to reading some of these maps. ;)

Being a residential area probably poses a problem, but iirc the organization pledged millions for park renovations up in Flushing, so if the team is willing to make the same promises to this area (parks, fields, rec centers, etc) it may be a go.

What are the roads like? Is there a main artery? (BQE?)

As a Green Bay native, I know that a stadium in a residential area can be quite charming provided the residents aren't hostile. Build a small bar district nearby to serve gameday crowds, and it would absolutely work.

Those situations tend to work when the population density follows the creation of the stadium (a la Lambeau, Wrigley, Yankee Stadium), rather than the other way around.

This would be politically impossible. Read the article and tell me how many people intimately involved in this process would be in favor of a stadium. 180 degrees of from what anybody wants.

Also, would be smack in the middle of one of the highest density crime areas in the city. And before you say it, not remotely comparable to Yankee Stadium in that regard. At least not Yankee Stadium over the past 30 years. Unless you're talking about crime of the organized variety.

@Vinjay It was reported that Pier 40 was actually the league's first choice before the Flushing Meadows proposal, and before CFG took over the reins:
M.L.S. initially wanted to build a stadium on Pier 40 along the Hudson River. The league offered to fix the pier and to give youth leagues that play there access to the field. Although some residents from the adjoining neighborhood liked the idea, advocates for Hudson River Park ultimately disapproved.

The league then explored about 20 other sites, including locations in Harlem, Staten Island, Randalls Island and Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, as well as four sites in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. M.L.S. officials liked the park because it was close to the many soccer fans in Queens; was near subways, rail lines and highways; and was accessible to parking at Citi Field.

Yes I remember that now but people do still bring it up as a suggestion from time to time. The problem is its hardly likely any initial plans will be revived such as pier 40 or the site near Yankee Stadium.

I think at some point if the sheikh wants some beautiful nicely located stadium sporting the words Etihad Stadium in the worlds biggest market, he's going to have to spend some quality moola.
If the sheikh has money and wants to build a stadium in the worlds biggest market, he should build a self man made island on the Hudson river. Like the ones in Dubai. Haha

Let's just hope it's not similiar to the now-scratched plans of the Golden State Warriors toilet bowl arena:

I think NYCFC is going to be in Yankee Stadium for some time and I don't really find that to be an issue. It is honestly one of the reasons why I bought season tickets. I enjoy going to Yankee Stadium because it is one of the best athletic venues in the country. I've been to baseball, football, and soccer games there and they've all been great. It's going to be hard to build a medium-sized outdoor venue in the city that meets the needs of both the organization and the city. I don't think the Yankees (even though they own only 20%) would want the team to be too far from Yankee Stadium or The Bronx. Although we already know that the other 80% of ownership doesn't have the best interests of NYC or NYCFC in mind.

I just worry about the atmosphere with the stadium being half empty, and a lot of sections being quite a ways from the actual field. I watch a lot of Italian soccer and these problems can completely kill the mood of games.

I don't think that the atmosphere is based on sections being far away from the field as much as the amount of people in the stadium. When I was at football games at Yankee Stadium (has the same distance from field and awkward viewing angles) the place was rocking, because there was 48000+ in the stadium. Also those games had really passionate fan bases. We just need that: people and passion.

Damn. I feel for you man. All those nil-nils and 1-nils have to diminish seratonin levels.
