With respect to neighborhood opposition and community input, there probably is no better location in the city to build a major event space without getting derailed.

To the East you have Citi field and parking lots.
To the north is a highway and Flushing Bay.
To the East is Flushing, but separated by both a highway and Flushing Creek.
To the south is the subway line, railroad line, a stretch of Roosevelt Avenue with no buildings on it, and beyond that park land.
I doubt there is a spot in the city this well served by both subway and highways that has literally no residential or commercial existing residents who would care to complain.
As others have noted, people will raise objections for unrelated reasons. And some will say we should just make it all housing. But there really is no cause for community opposition because of NIMBYism, and that is kind of extraordinary.
