Why would Rayo invest in second tier US soccer when they are barely able to compete in Spain?
Better yet, is Rayo viable financially in Spain? And even if they are, why invest in Oklahoma? Weird stuff.
it's as idiotic as Real Salt Lake . . .As is the name of the NASL team. Rayo OKC? Puke.
I'm pretty sure the name is the least of NASL's problems.it's as idiotic as Real Salt Lake . . .
USL and NASL have been battling over Oklahoma City for quite a while now.
There's a long convoluted story behind this tussle which also involves the Tulsa market.
Perhaps someday when I'm in an expositive mood, I can summarize.
The point is if you have any interest in the battle for control of the US soccer pyramid, you should focus here.
UPDATE:
Here's a couple more links that explain the background of this story.

Good for the Cosmos for winning but they only had 10k show up. How many show up next year with no Raul to entice them?
I wouldn't mind a few of those Cosmos players though. The hat trick Argentine, Lucky Msona, Walter Restrepo etc.
Probably the USL team because of the stadium deal and the pre-existing fan base.in your opinion who wins oklahoma ?
Energy are in town and established. I'll be surprised if Rayo OKC is around a year from now.Probably the USL team because of the stadium deal and the pre-existing fan base.
Nothing's assured, of course.
who knows, but isint february 2016 waaaay to soon to put a team out there? also i read somewhere that the president says the club in OKC will be self sufficient and wont need additional investment. LOL wut?Energy are in town and established. I'll be surprised if Rayo OKC is around a year from now.
I don't like referring to new clubs or teams as new "markets". Some markets just aren't soccer friendly than others, Just because there's a city or state that doesn't have a soccer team doesn't mean you need to have a team there.
If a city or state has enough fans to handle multiple teams whether they're in a 500 seat, 5000 seat or 50000 seat stadium, then so be it. Let the fans decide which clubs prosper and which clubs go bankrupt.
Go ahead and have 2 teams in Oklahoma City. Let the the marketing departments go head-to-head and try to win the most supporters. You'll never have a North London Derby or Merseyside Derby in the US with the way things are.
technically the only way they play each other is thru the US open cup but seeing how the they make the pairings by region then its probably very obvious they are going to pair them together every year assuming OK energy makes it to the third or what ever round NASL teams come in.
i still question where this money is coming from in Rayo's case, if they get relegated then what?
I don't know exactly what to say about that quote. Does that guy even soccer? They may well be counting on the NASL team being a profit-making endeavour - not to fund the Spanish club, but to avoid them having to constant dip into their own pockets to bail it out.
It will be interesting to see how the two clubs interact, whether they exchange players at all.
Edit: on a quick review, apparently ROKC is owned by Rayo's owner, not by Rayo themselves. I would presume he has the money to bail out both clubs himself.
Interesting to note also that Rayo Vallecano's fans are in uproar about this. Also, I enjoyed this particular quote:
