U.s. To Host 2016 Copa America

Not necessarily. We'd be competing for a combination of all the CONCACAF and CONEMBOL bids. 3.5 + 4.5 for a total of 8 bids. They may even add others to make up for the quality of the competition and take away from UEFA's 13. I think the US and Mexico (maybe Costa Rica) can outplay the 4-5 worst South American teams to qualify. Will there be a cycle we don't? Maybe. But then WC qualifying has a meaning and it will harden us to be a better team in WC competition.

What's not explained is how Confed Cup qualifying would work.

I reckon CONCACAF and CONMEBOL merging would be the catalyst for them rethinking the number of places that different confederations get. I know that Africa have been arguing that they should have more since forever.

One things for sure - if the US were to become permanent hosts, we'd better start playing the correct / full national anthems before games. I haven't been able to catch them all, but in the games I've seen they've played Chile's Anthem for Uruguay and cut off Argentina's last night, leaving the players to sing it by themselves. Those kind of fuck ups are really embarrassing, especially when it happens two days in a row. Is it really that hard?

They should have thought about realistic price points.
Vice Sports just published an article on that very topic.
https://sports.vice.com/en_us/artic...ticket-prices-are-leaving-some-stadiums-empty

"So why are ticket prices so high to begin with? One potential explanation is that all the other revenue—sponsorship and TV money—goes to CONCACAF and CONMEBOL while ticket revenue is the only way U.S. Soccer can recover their costs, which Gulati called "not cheap." Last week, Gulati told Sports Illustratedthat an average per game attendance of 35,000 will be "sufficient to make the federation's investment worthwhile."'
....
"[The] Copa America may be permanently relocated to the United States, perhaps in a combined tournament with the Gold Cup. Which, in the end, explains the ticket prices perfectly. Ticket prices are high not because U.S. Soccer needs to recoup costs, but because they are about to monopolize major American soccer tournaments."

Meanwhile, did anyone else watch the Argentina v Chile match last night? The most entertaining Copa match so far. Constant end-to-end action. (OT, but this seems to be the only Copa America thread)

Sanchez is so good, but needs more help. He had Chile looking like a one man team last night, taking on 3 himself at times and still getting a shot off. Argentina is such a complete team. Even with Messi out and Aguero out for the majority of the match, they showed up big time. They are so good on the counter, and it's very fun to watch. I smell an Argentina v. Mexico final, which would be nuts.

Side note/question - is this the first year that yellows have been so strict? Two yellows in consecutive games = suspended for the next game (unless its the final). I didn't count but I feel like there's teams with 7+ guys riding a yellow. It almost feels like we could end up with too many suspended players to play games eventually...

When you can rest Messi and bring Aguero and Lamela off the bench you know your good. Argentina should win this thing fairly easily but they have twenty plus years of failing to get it done despite their talent just now so who knows.

Sanchez is a pure difference maker...but after him and Vidal...it drops to Vargas and Isla...then everyone else. It's hard to compare any other to Argentina, they are stacked. Yet Chile were definitely in it and had their chances.

Really a pleasurable game to watch though. Love the back and forth with counters.

Yeah Vargas got into some dangerous areas but wasn't really ever able to capitalize. Vidal's early yellow really bottled him up for the rest of the match.

Permanent hosts? Are they seriously thinking of instituting a rule saying that the competition only ever be played in the US? That would be ridiculous, surely? What about when the fans back in South America start arguing that they're being deprived of the chance of seeing their country playing in a major competition at home?

I think it was posted earlier or in another thread, but there's been talk of it:

United States may become permanent host of Copa America
http://www.starsandstripesfc.com/2016/6/6/11869352/copa-america--gold-cup-may-merge-one-tournament

Personally I don't think there's any weight to it, and I'd be opposed to it myself.

It wouldn't be a merger of Copa America and Gold Cup, it would be the continuation of this new version of Copa America Centenario.

In truth, I'm disappointed with this tournament...

I feel they priced the South American fans out. Hell, probably priced several Americans out, too. Not to mention the lack of promoting the event.

You would think for the first one of these they'd want it totally sold out with really wild crowds to create a buzz around it.

Just feels mismanaged and half-baked.

The phrase "Done on the cheap" comes to mind.

Absolutely. They overestimated how much people were willing to spend for this tournament.

I also believe the soccer nous of Americans is a lot higher now than ever and they know whats a good game and whats not.

Saying that, im glad the USA won as i fly out from Australia friday morning to catch the game in Philly . Should be pretty awesome and im hoping for a USA game in Jersey as well for the qtrs !!

It's looking pretty good at this point that the USMNT will finish 2nd in group A and be in that quarterfinal at MetLife -- looks like it'll either be against Brazil or Peru. Not sure which team I would prefer. Brazil brought a half A/half B squad and Peru is no push over. They did a great job at the last Copa America and seem to be carrying that over to this summer. Tonight's group B matches will tell us a lot.

I think Ecuador will come out over Peru. We'll see.

I was so excited about this tournament and even more so when I saw two games being played nearby. Then I saw the ticket prices and the game times that made it hard for me to take my son, and I will now watch passively on TV. Big fail.

Was at the game last night and the crowd was great. Some AO KC fans agreed to a trade with AO Orlando fans Zusi for Brek Shea straight up.

I offered up Lampard but there were no takers. And then was serenaded with Hey Baby for the next 5 minutes....

Excited for Philly this weekend.
