They were also a different result or two away in the final qualification fixtures from not qualifying for the WC. They also benefit from having soccer as their #1 sport and having a worldly talent in Messi playing for them. But I do agree that even when in shambles they've managed to scrape through, but comparing our roster to Argentina is a bit of a stretch. We don't have a worldly talent or massive youth system to grab talent from. It is improving though, and I'd hate to see the US waste what looks like a very promising youth uprising the next few years.
I'd hate to see this wave of soccer enthusiasm in the US be shut down due to the ineptitude of the US federation and national team. It's crazy to see European clubs setting up offices in the US to expand their fanship/reach and our national team is getting walked off the field by... Canada.
