USMNT Talk

It's true, the US has no #1 keeper. Totally a toss up between several guys right now. Some of whom are currently injured.

So different from earlier eras, when top-tier keepers were pretty much all we had.

keepers are expected to so much more now though. i think we still have good shot stoppers. we need our keepers to command the box a bit more. but playing with feet is where they make most of their mistakes, which just wasn't expected of the earlier era keepers who would just boot everything that came their way.

but even judging based on modern criteria, we don't have a standout #1. total toss-up and whoever poch seems to like for however he wants to play. who knows... that guy could be our ice man.

I'm still behind our guy. VOTE FREESE.

FWIW I listened to the Futbol Americas pod and the consensus (including Kasey Keller) was that even setting aside last night’s error, Freese isn’t and never was a serious contender for the US #1.
If Freese isn't a candidate for #1 keeper, I don't know who is. Turner's been our #1 for years, and he's in camp and behind Freese. The usual 2nd to Turner is Horvath, and he wasn't called in.

Maybe Poch rates Steffan or Schulte more highly, but they aren't here, and Freese is the one with the chance to prove himself.

ETA: Poch has apparently been publicly supportive of Freese after Sunday's match.

Also, Steffen is currently dealing with a knee injury, but has also been extremely up-and-down. Like a historically bad season last year and a ridiculously good this year, so who knows.

If Turner actually completes his rumored move to Lyon and starts I'd imagine he'll be number one come next summer.
Lyon just got relegated via some sort of regulatory decision.

Apparently it has to do with debt or overspending or not paying transfer fees, or a combination of the above.
Not sure we can count on Turner going there now.

Anyone else going to the USA - Korea match at Red Bull Arena this Saturday?

I'd appreciate some good advice from those who have been to that stadium (I have not). I am going to be driving, and I understand that can be a bit of a shitshow.
  • Any good advice about where to park for easiest in/out?
  • How easy is it to set up a tailgate there? Any advice?
  • What is the food like in the Stadium?
  • Any other thoughts?

The food at RBA sucks.

Get there early to tailgate and stay late to tailgate if you plan on driving. Absolute shit show getting in and out.

I found setting up a tailgate as easy as any giants game.

Some people park in Newark and get dinner there and take the path. But it’s like parking near the 4 line in Woodlawn the day of a Yankee game. Riff Raff kinda know how long you are going to be away from your car. For Messi first game at RBA arena I parked at 388 Market St. its bit of walk but you avoid the bumper to bumper traffic.

it is sad that almost anywhere the USMNT plays, save for some spots in the midwest or the south, it's hostile territory.

not surprising, but it is sad. not that US Soccer does much to change that.

embarrassing. we are gonna get humiliated as a host country next year the way this is going...
I liked the way we played under B. J. Callaghan. He cut the boys loose and let them run wild and have some fun. That's where we need to be if we're going to compete in the World Cup: mustangs on the go.

I don't see Poch doing that. In fact, I don't see Poch doing much of anything.

I'm not sure freedom is what these guys need. I think Poch just had a tough time getting together a group of players to play together and get some chemistry. The list of injuries and players opting out of national team duty didn't help matters. But here, we had a chance to field a starting 11 that would play at the WC next year. Between now and then, we simply don't have any real, meaningful, competitive games. Playing South Korea was a good litmus test of where we're at though and we didn't take the opportunity. Instead, Poch didn't call in every player that he should have called in. Opting to fill the roster with MLS players instead.

From what I have seen in interviews and such, Poch does not do a good job communicating with players in the pool, including players who you would think would be selected for the WC squad. Why was McKennie not called up? It just doesn't make sense. Why did we start Ream and Blackmon at CBs? are we really gonna rely on a (will be) 38 year old to run our back line at the WC next summer?

The whole thing is a mess from the players to the coach. I don't see anything happening or changing that is suddenly going to make everything click. Depending on the group we get selected into, we could end up being seriously humiliated. Hell, even if we get an "easy" group, I don't have much confidence this team can dominate and advance without issue.

I can't disagree with much of this. But I think it points to why Callaghan was successful over his (very short) stint: he didn't try and make up lost youth development ground or train everyone up to a certain level of clinical play. He just told the guys to get out there and run at 'em.

Maybe it was just because they were unleashed from Berhalter's defense-oriented approach, but suddenly we were playing with flair and having fun. The side came to life, got on the front foot and attacked.

Now it looks like we've regressed under Poch and we're back to everyone trying to learn a season's worth of tactics in a few days of camp. Too much thinking (don't think — you can only hurt the team), not enough reckless abandon. We look flat again.

Not that reckless abandon will get us into contention for a World Cup. But I'd much rather go out in a blaze of glory on our home soil than just sit there frozen until we melt away. And hey, you never know. Get things wild enough and it's anyone's game.
