Lampard To Nycfc

Hi lads a Englishmen here who heard about the 9/11 Lampard story and how it had you all flapping.

Lampard said nothing about 9/11, he was merely drunk in front of some 'upset Americans' shortly after 9/11. He did this in England and, no offence, but who are you to tell us how we should act in our country?

Good luck for the future.

I apologize if I'm wrong, which is often the case but you can't expect to come into our house telling us people shouldn't be mad cuz 'it didn't happen there'. That's ridiculous.

Whether you agree or not is irrelevant just like how I feel is irrelevant. Some people were upset with Lampard. 9/11 is still a very deep wound with the US and New Yorkers just like 7/7 is a deep wound for the UK. People want to be angry, let them. Who cares. All this Lampard shit is clickbait.

No offence but we're not "all flapping." I was going to mail the editor but figured not to waste my time with it. If you actually read through the post not everyone is holding it against him since he was young and there were numerous reports of what was/wasn't said as was pointed out. The writer picked on the couple of people that did take issue and only wrote the article at that angle. It's whatever they write to get people on the site and sell ad space. Welcome to 21st century journalism.

No need to go on the offensive against me, my post was supposed to add to the forum rather than turn into a warzone. Probably best to just delete my posts.

RIP to all those who lost there lives in the twin tower tragedy.

Dude chill we aren't going on the offensive. You said we're "all flapping" which is far from the truth. I'm not just gonna read that and say yeah I'm pretty pissed if I'm not. Just telling you like it is. If you get an idea about the supporters of NYCFC from reading about us in a british based newspaper and it's false then yeah I'm going to correct you.
We're all pretty laid back and tons of supporters from other clubs here as well. If Lampard is signed I'll support him but I'm really anxious to hear what if anything he has to say about the 9/11 rumors

As am I.

He will basically send out some grovelling apology written by his agent just to appease certain people.

Hey guys,

I'm a CFC fan and it breaks my heart to see our Legend SUPER Frank leave us but I guess it's time...
He's arguably one of the best Midfielders in the World, he's definitely not out of shape, he's been playing top level EPL last year, of course he's not 29 so you need to manage him, what games to play when to take him off but he still scored 15 goals in the EPL in 12-13 and this season was converted as more of a DM but despite his age showed he performed well in a position that's not his and gave 5 goals and 4 assits in one of the most demanding leagues in the world but obviously he's more of a Box to Box.

He has amazing vision, long passes and I'm not even going to talk about his shot, you should know about and even bonus wise he probably the best penalty taker in the world.

Obviously you don't have the in prime lampard but then you would need to put down 40-50m pounds to get him, now you're getting him on a free transfer.

On the 9/11 situation it was what 13-14 years ago? He was 22-23 , a kid , I don't know anyone that's never been disrespectful or done something stupid when they are young, he's 36 now, it's time to move on and don't let the media.

Also you potentially have one of the biggest fan bases in the world that will follow a little of their captain so more exposure to your cub won't hurt

Actually 9/11 was probably just as big a story in UK as 7/7 was. After all it was obvious Al Qaeda were going to pay London a visit at some point. Anyone who thought otherwise would have been highly delusional. I have far more vivid memories from the day of 9/11 than 7/7 anyway and only partly because of the scale. No city in the world would hold a permanent grudge against Lampard.

Well maybe Liverpool.

The club should prepare for some minor backlash and they probably have expected it. There will certainly be more stories the day he signs. Cosmos and RB fans are going to exploit this but ultimately it may just reflect badly on them. Hypocrites of the highest order.

(this isn't to Vinjay Vinjay - he's just the post above. Sorry man.)

If people want to hold a grudge, or expect an apology, or not support him, they are well within their rights.

I haven't seen one link supporting a story that it didn't involve 9/11, nor have I seen a link quoting or even suggesting that Frank ever apologized.

These guys are professional athletes. They don't need anyone's protection from message board criticism. He's not going to take you for sushi at Tao just because you stood up for him on nycfcforums.com. I promise.

Wanting an apology, not wanting to sign him, deciding never to support him, whatever. These are all equally valid responses and having that sort of opinion doesn't make one juvenile or suggest they "need to move on". Some things are objectively a subjective matter. This is one of them.

No one here was even discussing this any more until some tabloid article quoted months old posts.

But since everyone else brought it up, I will reiterate my position in a more sensitive way: There certainly must be a better charter player for a club in NYC than one who at a minimum was a drunken asshole to people impacted by our city's greatest tragedy.

And again, a lot (most?) here don't want him anyway, for very legitimate football reasons. Anyway, the point is, give your opinion if you want, but telling someone how they should feel about judging a player's past behavior is ridiculous. It will lead only to frustration.

The irony of this post is incredible. There are so many levels. One might enjoy it simply on its own hypocrisy or one could easily find some cultural history hypocrisy as well.

GOLD, JERRY. GOLD.

Midas, Everything I can find on the incident says that he was merely drunk near some Americans, not that he said anything to them disparaging to 9/11. Do you have a link showing otherwise? Seems an important distinction to me.

I am not aware of any real proof of anything. If they were New Yorkers, I doubt they'd be offended by drunkenness alone.

It's certainly not verifiable, but in my subjective opinion, it wouldn't have been an issue at all if there weren't some element of contextual insensitivity or even possibly malicious nature to it. The only people who know are the group to whom the offense occurred.

I'm not a voluntary spokesperson for the "Frank Lampard Hates America" contingent. I was just engaging in some hyperbole to make the point I reiterated above regarding my belief that there are better suited players to have the honor of being NYCFC's initial core. From that perspective, I think the perception of the circumstance alone is enough to justify passing over him.

Frankly, if I didn't think we would be signing what is effectively Lampard's Bloated Corpse, then I might be more forgiving.

There aren't any quotes for it anywhere. When the Lampard story first came up (several months ago) I did some poking and it seemed like it's possible that 9/11 wasn't even mentioned - they just came across a small group of Americans who were looking disconsolate and were drinking to drown their sorrows and it seems like what was said was probably more along the lines of mocking American stereotypes/accents than anything else. It's just that it happened to be 24 hours after the WTC attack and the Americans, when they told their story to the press, said that they thought the recentness of 9/11 meant that they should have been respected and that being insulted for being American on that day of all days was out of line - which, of course, it was.

That's just my interpretation from the couple of dozen press articles I scanned, though. Many articles made no attempt at suggesting 9/11 was not the subject of the conversation, so it's possible I am wrong, but in my experience of interpreting these kinds of stories you can usually get the most accurate interpretations by finding the longest and most moderately-toned articles, and those articles hinted that 9/11 was simply never brought up at the time.

If that's the case then why are people so pissed this guy? Makes no sense at all. I'm a NY'er, born and raised, and 9/11 still haunts me, but if he just acted like a jerk to some Americans, then so what. Definitely poor form on his part, but I'm not going to rail against him and ask for an apology. If he was mocking them about 9/11, then that changes everything. But like you mentioned, there's no proof that he did. People need to get over it and move on.

I fully understand that internet forums are largely a platform for people to bitch and moan. I'm just trying to express a dissenting opinion and make it clear to any guests viewers we might having that not all Americans or NYCFC supporters feel strongly opposed to Lampard and that I in fact guess it's a vocal minority .

Since the club won't comment we have no certain idea whether there's going to be an apology or not. Since everyone associated with NYCFC at executive level seems to have common sense they probably will make some reference to it simply to quell the minority. I respect NYCFC fans like Midas who at least have a legitimate gripe with Lampard (unlike those at other clubs with their false outrage) though the majority have evidently supported the signing. In September 2001 an apology was issued via Chelsea Football Club on behalf of Lampard and the other players involved. This time at the official press conference I'm sure he will say something personally on the matter. On that matter it would make sense to unveil Xavi at the same time.

Plus like Falastur said there's nothing to indicate he directly mocked 9/11. Anyone who mocked 9/11 in the UK is an idiot and should have realised London was on the hitlist. Only surprise is it took them almost 4 years.

Not all footballers are unintelligent (far from it) that's stereotypical nonsense. In Lampard's case he's got a very high IQ. I don't understand why anyone with a high IQ would get drunk in the first place since its voluntarily putting yourself in a position of weakness. I wouldn't know being teetotal albeit that's more a taste choice than mind related. So its really got to be put down to youth and remember he was part of a group. Many people make their stupidest mistakes when they aren't acting alone. Especially intoxicated young men.

He isn't John Terry (coincidentally one of those who were with Lampard during the incident) at least with Lampard we can give him the benefit of the doubt that his regret was sincere. I wouldn't have believed a word from Terry if it was him signing.
