MLS/LigaMX Superleague?!

Yeah. Exactly. The big question, for me, is the salary cap. Would Liga MX adopt MLS's salary restrictions or would MLS raise the cap and loosen the rules?

Maybe go the route of the DH. When a LigaMX team plays in an MLS park they have to have their roster salary cap compliant. And when an MLS team plays in a LigaMX park they can sign whomever they want for those matches.

While this makes zero sense, it does open things up for some serious ringer action.

"NYCFC's Lionel Messi is listed as questionable for Tuesday night's trip to Cruz Azul. The new signing from Barcelona is at risk of missing the one game for which he is eligible this season, due to an extreme case of gigantism, having binged on Ronny Deila's patented brain tonic."

I think if they did this it MLS and Liga MX would remain nearly seperate leagues. MLS teams would mostly play MLS teams and MX teams would mostly play MX teams. Every team would only play 3-5 games a year against teams from the other league so there wouldn't be crazy travel but there would be a few interleague games every weekend. MLS Cup final would be an MLS team vs an MX team though so a likely outcome would be a drastic increase in viewership but also MX teams winning a lot.

Agreed. A fan hears "merger" and thinks "new divisions and schedules." A league hears "merger" and thinks "revenue sharing and economies of scale."

MLS and LigaMX could theoretically merge their businesses and still just do their own things on the field, under their own salary structures, and just play the Leagues Cup. They'll likely make incremental steps toward each other and further increase interleague play, but it would probably be very incremental.

Another note to add -- wrapping the media rights to the Mexican National Team into SUM must also be on the table, unless the Liga MX owners would not receive shares of SUM. That would certainly help explain MLS/SUM's interest in merging empires.
