MLS Week 12 - 2019

Haha, I have no recollection of him being caught out of position, but it's long ago enough to be possible and I have no inclination to go looking through old tape.
When described as a traffic cone, that the other team easily bypassed, would suggest that he was not in the right position otherwise he’d have engaged the play or at least marked a player - there is no “static” when defending.

That would suggest that I take the accuracy of the description for granted. What you said about "static" when defending made me think about that cliche about good centerbacks not needing to make tackles.

Too bad ATL couldn't put in a late equalizer. And what a way for Guzan to lose his scoreless streak, on a soft slow motion header across the entire length of goal.
I thought he was just beaten by the flight of an incredible ball.

Don’t know where else to post it, but Wondo is now the all time regular season goal leader after scoring FOUR goals today. He’s been two away for like an entire year and all of a sudden has an explosive game.

I can’t understate just how awesome of a leader Wondo is. I spent a lot of years watching the Quakes at Buckshaw and he ALWAYS, came and spoke to the fans/SGs after the games. No matter how bad they were blown out (which was pretty often at the time). Never complained about all of the undeserved criticism relentlessly thrown at him after WC2014. The guy is all heart. So happy for him!!
And the goal Wondo scored to break the record was the epitome of a Wondo goal.

(don't mean to take anything away from him, he's an incredible goal scorer)

Interesting. I was rather more upset with Lawrence getting in Villalba's face to begin with, but I think it's safe to say that neither of them came off that well.
I don't approve of what Lawrence did, but he stopped short of physical contact. Villalba initiated that with his chest bump. As physical assaults go, that is clearly a lesser violation in the rules than a punch or face contact, so I would not look for a suspension, but it should get some discipline (but I also doubt anything happens).

Doesn't look like any discipline for Villalba, but Lawrence and Barlow from NJRB both with fines and Romario Williams from Atlanta with a fine as well.

Kinda harsh IMO for all three of the players receiving fines for this.

Just so stupid. Three people inadvertently and barely contact the neck/head/face zone and the idiot who made the first assault gets nothing because he went chest to chest. Using your hands to ward off a chest bump is a completely normal, justified act of self-defense, and yes, there is a risk your hands slip upwards. But I guess the league wants to encourage people to respond to chest bumps with more chest bumps, which are apparently completely legal even if you start a fight that way.

I seem to remember Johnson getting off with just a yellow for his antics vs LA.... as the initiator, no less....

And yet there was a risk of Johnson’s hand pulling Ibra’s man bun and/or slipping to his neck/face - not as though the back of the head is any less vulnerable than the neck/face - and yet all Johnson got was a yellow for chest bumping Ibra from behind to initiate the entire confrontation followed by end of game confrontation/jawing theatrics.

I thought Johnson deserved some sanction for what he did, and he did receive a yellow. Whether he should have been fined as well is arguable and I'm not going to argue with anyone who holds either position. I think the players in the RB/ATL game were fined because the game was over when everything happened and nobody received any cards. But the real travesty, IMO, is to fine the 3 people in that game for inadvertent slight touching of the protected zones while letting Villalba get nothing.

Let's also be clear that there was a big difference between what Villalba did vs what Johnson did.
