NYCFC Training Facility Thread

technicalities be damned, they are testing us. If we don't bring out torches and pitchforks on this they will assume we would be ok with a stadium in jersey. I vote we overreact.
Well I can't argue with that. Now where'd I put that @#$% pitchfork?

From a design standpoint, those renderings leave a LOT to be desired. This facility looks like it's being done on the cheap, a warehouse-style structure with grass in front. It's a BIG Meh & whatever - great to have our own training center so not mooching on Purchase, but Beta Version1.0 looks like it immediately needs to be upgraded to 2.0 or even skipped to 3.0.

Man, what? What were you expecting to see? Some Dubai lookin' shit? It's a training facility in a small town with who knows what kinds of ordinances and restrictions. The architect is experienced and does fantastic work all over the world. Personally, I'm waiting until I see it first hand.

Do you want the micro or macro response and set of examples? I'll give you both.

First, whatever rendering is presented is the pie in the sky rendering and it never lives up to it as the design gets sliced/diced for one reason or another. Look at DCUnited's stadium - that's been changed/reduced three(?) times already getting smaller, boxier, and less elegant. This rendering is ho-hum to begin with, so this is the ceiling.

Second, just because it's a training center, it doesn't mean it has to look utilitarian. Town Ordinances won't necessarily dictate the design aesthetic unless it's in a historic district, and I would put money on it that this isn't. Yes it is functional and satisfies the program set forth, but a simple commercial wall-hung sink, flushometer toilet, and plastic-inlay tub also functions as a bathroom (and satisfies its role) and yet nobody would put that in their home - they'd make it as appealing as their budget allowed; same goes with a kitchen - there are no-frills functional appliances/cabinets/finishes and then there's something to be proud of. If I was going to that training facility each morning for work, it wouldn't wow/excite me as I drove up. Perhaps the interior will be decked-out and state of the art, but the exterior is left wanting.... I chalk it up as a missed opportunity.

Now maybe this is a short term solution, and if so fine, but I doubt the club wants to be in the construction mindset forever. And at the end of the day, it's their facility, and I doubt I'll ever have the need to visit unless they start playing competitions there, so they can do what they want. I'm just personally not impressed with the public rendering.

2) "The plans consist of one and a half regulation-sized grass fields, as well as a 25,000 square foot building, housing the team offices, space for player rehabilitation and welfare, amongst other amenities." Does this mean that NYCFC is giving up it's 600 Third Avenue lease?

I suspect they'll move the team's admin functions there, yes - the supporter reps, HR, marketing, digital etc. That would be in line with how other CFG teams do it. However, CFG keeps a strong presence in a number of global cities so I suspect that the office for the purposes of arranging commercial deals, meeting contacts, holding meetings, etc so I suspect that the office will be kept on for executive and higher-level purposes.

You can get an impression of what it's going to be like from looking at photos of the other two existing City Football Academy buildings in Melbourne and Manchester. The renders make it obvious that they are going with the same design (the grey "bubble" strips on the outer cladding, notably). I'd say you can take quite a lot from looking at Melbourne City's facilities, which are very comparable in scale, in fact.

CFG don't seem to like building edifices, but they do like making whatever they do build look very clean and sharp, especially on the inside. See the below (for the record, Melbourne City have already expanded the below building somewhat, just about doubling its size IIRC):

Exactly.

I'm just going to see the forest.

it looks like crap. And it's ok to say that.

Ultimately, it's what is on the inside of the building that counts. I am surprised there isn't a larger playing facility.

We shouldn't be upset about what our training facility looks like. That's a bit odd to me. We could probably do with an extra field but I'm sure the club decided it's not needed for a reason. More than likely not planning on housing any team there but the first team in the near future.
Call me to complain when they build the stadium next to it. Then I'll be upset.
Also ATL has all the land in the world to work with at a much lower price. That facility, despite its size, probably costs less than ours.

I was at a client literally across the street from the Red Bulls facility last week and it was nothing spectacular. Looked like they only had one full-size field, though it was kind of difficult to see as they had some trees and large bushes around.

I'm honestly not sure why we would need more than one full field. 1.5 seems like a good size to me. If anything, you could have a full scrimmage going on and then maybe some individual drills on the side. But its not like football where you have a 53 man roster and need the additional real estate.

I'm surprised there isn't a mini bleacher section in order to have specters for friendlies or the academy.

as far as I know, it's not an academy facility and not sure what friendlies would be played there?

Foreign team in the states during their preseason (or something) and want to get a scrimmage in. Perhaps "friendly" was a misnomer, and scrimmage is better - but at any rate, that happens a lot and for some visiting teams' quality, it could be good for spectators
