Kreis was on the record as saying LW has too many defensive responsibilities and he'd rather Villa use his energy going forward. What about moving Villa back to LW since he seems to constantly drift left anyway?

I like this, but where is all the money coming from (from a cap space standpoint)?Major acquisitions:
ST - Will Bruin @ $225k
DM - Danny Williams, Oriol Rosell, Jonathan Spector, or Conor O'Brien @ $150k - $400k
LB - Bryan Oviedo @ $436k + allocation money
Mix can play any of the four midfield spots to keep Lampard/Pirlo fresh or fill in for an injury, or Open Cup matches.
Allen can back up or start over Iraola.
I'm pulling for John and Mena to win the CB spots, because I think they have the highest potential. But there's room here for another FA acquisition.
Finally, a keeper upgrade would be nice.

Only problem is that MLS doesn't have free agency. How are we signing guys like Will Bruin?

Yeah its not like a Bosman free contract, but NYC could sign Bruin if they could agree to terms with him and trade something (I wonder what Houston would want) to Dynamo for Will's rights. Its been done before. Would you trade say Shelton for Bruin? I would. His contract is up after this season. We would have to trade with Houston for his rights if they can't come to terms on a new deal with him, but definitely within the realm of possibilities.

I'm assuming you have several items in mind:
No more Calle ($200K freed up)
No more Grabavoy ($200K freed up)
No more Hernandez ($175K freed up)
No more Jacobson ($150K freed up)
No more Wingert ($215 K freed up)
Getting rid of Nemec freed up $300K
This frees up $1.24m. However, we now need to account for full DP seasons of Pirlo and Lampard ($487K).
I guess this does add up if the above moves are made (we'll see about Wingert/Grabavoy though). Do we have enough allocation money though for Oviedo?
If I had to pick one, it would have to be Grabavoy. A position where we already have a logjam, and a terrible player. At the least, Wingert provides some flexibility in positions and is somewhat serviceable, especially if Angelino doesn't return.Alot of moves in this thread are pipedreams. Obviously Calle and Nemec will be gone to free up space, but all of those vets that people want to cut are probably on guaranteed contracts since they are vets. The only way we can get rid of them is if their contracts expire at the end of the season (which we don't know) or if we buy them out. However, we can only buyout 1 guaranteed contract. None of them have the incentive to a mutual termination like we did with Nemec.
The real question is if you can only get rid of one of those players who do you get rid of?

If we're going to trade the present *and* the future we'd better get an entire back line that's incredibly good and has at least five good years left in them. And even then I'm not sure I like the idea although I'd be willing to think about it. It's tough to trade away a player on the national team.It seems crazy, but there are definitely scenarios where moving Mix and Shelton this offseason might be really good for the team.
It's unfortunately really true. I love Mix as a player and he rarely does the wrong things on the field, but for 750k, there are a lot of playmakers out there who can do more of those "right things". That's not to say he is a bad player, but he just hasn't been the lightning strike that the team seems to need from its #4 on the payroll. It seems crazy, but there are definitely scenarios where moving Mix and Shelton this offseason might be really good for the team.
I do agree with you. And think Mix is fantastic in his game. It's not sexy, but his play is necessary. I think he brings some gravitas being on the USMNT roster consistently and has a cult following. I just unfortunately think that, for 750k, you can find someone who can do more, though his time to shine will probably come once we've got some open spots in the midfield.Mix plays good offense and defense from CM, that combo is more than any other player does on the roster. He also runs tirelessly in central mid pulling apart the defense, in contrast to everyone else who stands around waiting for a pass and lets the defense form up into perfect banks of four. He passes to people in space. Any problem anyone has with Mix in MLS is entirely due to his misuse my our awful coach. The guy is a player.
