Why is Connor Brandt there? Are we just letting him train to get fit, or could there be some kind of plan to re-sign him??
The Kitman didn't get the memo when doing his heat-transfer ironing. He's been described as a trialist so it sounds like he has a chance to make the team if he performs well. One thing I noticed in the videos the team put out yesterday is that the established players had their numbers on their jackets while the trialists had blank jackets except for Conor who was wearing #16. Is that a sign that he's close to coming back or just an artifact of his previous club connection?

That being said, I think it's worth doing a little digging around the Homegrown rules. Homegrowns don't count against the Salary Cap. They raised the Homegrown allowance last year to accommodate Jordan Morris. What I don't know is how long we can lock players into an HG contract. I think LA Galaxy had Zardes on an HG contract for a couple of years.
There's is also a bullet point where it's cost-wise beneficial to not stock the last few spots, but I cannot recall the fine points to it.ABAICT, once upon a time it was as simple as "Homegrowns don't count against the Salary Cap" but not any more. All of what follows comes from the MLS Roster Rules with some help from the Wikipedia entry on MLS Homegrown Player Rule.
Every roster has 3 parts: Senior, Supplemental and Reserve.
Senior comprises spots 1-20, Reserve is 21-14 and Supplemental 25-28.
Supplemental and Reserve do not count against the salary cap.
Reserve must be 24 years old or younger during the league year.
Homegrown can be any category.
Homegrown on the Senior roster counts full cost.
In addition, clubs get $125k Homegrown Garber bucks to defray homegrown salary.
So you have maximum 8 slots for homegrowns who don't count against the cap, but 4 of those have to be 24 years old or younger, and you need those slots for other needs as well. For example, GA players have to be on the Supplemental Roster.
It would be nice to know that. My understanding is GAM does not expire but TAM does. The Homegrown cash was announced in connection with TAM and I'm betting it expires, but that's a guess. What's curious about the HG$ is whether it can be banked from year to year if unused? If so, then we've been hoarding for the last few years, and this would theoretically allow a talented HG to be part of the senior roster with no Cap hit.
Let me clarify and say that it's not a word for word quote. It's more along the lines of SOP for most all teams and really young players.Very good post. Didn't know that about Pulisic.
I don't know if the kid could contribute right now. I would imagine he can't. That being said, I think it's worth doing a little digging around the Homegrown rules. Something like that. But first you would stash as many of them as you could fit onto the reserve and/or supplemental rosters where you would not need any Garber Bucks. Then you would use the GBs to buy down those who had to be on the Senior Roster. The article I linked to specifically said you could spread the money among multiple players. So it sounds like a HG on the Senior Roster counts, but you get Garber Bucks to offset their cap hit. So if we sign 5 kids for $50k, they wouldn't count probably. But if we signed 5 kids for $100k, we could buy each of them down to $50k?
Same as when the Wilmington guys went to Mexico for the Necaxa match- they didn't have numbers on their training gear, so I'd go with "artifact of his previous club connection".He's been described as a trialist so it sounds like he has a chance to make the team if he performs well. Also noticed that Johnson has the 1 on his jacket which is out first #1 (i believe)
Akira Fitzgerald wore #1Yes, I posted this in the Sean Johnson player thread.
Historic First Player to wear the first number.
