Why Home Field Advantage Is Not What It Used to Be (Published 2020)
The home team doesn’t have the guaranteed lock it used to have. A number of factors are at play.
My opposition to VAR (replay, video review) is well documented. This article presents the best argument for it that I have seen:
"For instance, in 1999, the N.F.L. added a check on referee influence by instituting instant replay and coaches’ challenges. The next season, the home winning percentage dropped from 59.6 percent to 55.6. It was 51.7 percent this season, the lowest mark since 1972."
I think home field advantage is a good thing. But home field advantage due to referee intimidation/appeasement or whatever is not good. Also, this is the closest I have seen to a stat that indicates (however indirectly) that the cumulative effect of all replay decisions is to improve accuracy and game results.
