2017 Schedule Thread

I have no issue with playing the Rev's 3x. I don't get the Orlando thing. I don't get the feeling anyone cares about them, even with Kreis. In order of preference for facing a third time:

Tier One
1. Red Bulls
Tier Two
2. Toronto
Tier Three
3. New England
4. Philadelphia
5. DC United
Tier Four
6. Montreal
7. Atlanta
8. Chicago
9. Orlando
10. Columbus
I'd bump Atlant up to co-Tier 2. They've got the makings of a fun/skillful lineup that would be great to watch, and they're going to be the buzz-kings this year so the games should be packed. NE is never a game to get excited for.

I'm assuming a lot of you will fly down for the ATL game. I know I'm definitely doing that one and probably going to fly up for their first game in the stadium.

Maybe we'll actually play Mix.

Maybe that was the whole plan. He's been resting for May 2017.
If it was 2016, there'd be very little squad rotation. Since it's 2017, it will be nice to see if the coaching staff learned anything about cross-country travel coinciding with congested fixtures.... my guess is our #12-14 guys get starting minutes for a few games and #15/16 sees the field for spot duty. Not much past that. They'll ride the horse until it croaks.

Especially if ATL gets off to a good start, their fans are going to top Seattle in terms of entitlement/arrogance

Interesting tidbit from ESPN's article about the schedule

The league has also taken steps to reduce the number of games played during the day in blistering summer temperatures. Just nine matches will be held on early summer afternoons, down from 15 in 2016.
http://www.espnfc.us/major-league-s...schedule-including-break-in-july-for-gold-cup

Given the number of games with a starting time of "TBD" - it seems unlikely the summer day games will be reduced.

Looking at our schedule, we have 3 games in the months of June, July and August that start between 1 and 2pm (and 3 more that are "TBD"), so I don't know what the fuck the league is talking about.

PV specifically said he learned from the 3-game week that ended with RBW. Not just rest and rotation -- we rested lots of guys at Toronto -- so I think he believes he should have sent some players straight home after Portland and avoided the extra travel. We'll see how he handles this stretch, but it's tough. There are tradeoffs no matter what you do.

Atlanta game is Sunday night of Memorial Day weekend, which makes it a good one for travel. Add to it that Atlanta is a really easy and fun trip from NYC. Lots of flights, and you can just take the train to downtown and anywhere else you want to go.

Plus 11:45 AM on July 22. It's not inconceivable that they virtually eliminated such games everywhere else but YS due to our special situation.

Interesting is the TV situation. I see a Univision and Unimas game on Saturdays, and ESPN picking up a Friday game (at NJRB) and a Saturday game. And this was just at looking at our schedule.

Is there supposed to be more MLS games in general on the TV networks this upcoming season?

Agreed. But I look at it that we get extra games against non-playoff teams from last year. :)

Also, the end to our schedule looks to be a bit soft.

Home against Houston
at Montreal
at Chicago
at NER
Home against Columbus

I know that is 3 road games versus 2 at home, but Chicago and NER shouldn't really scare us.

One thing I learned last year, and I have to credit Ulrich Ulrich for pressing the point a lot last pre-season: you can't tell now which teams are going to be tough or easy. MLS changes too much year to year and too unpredictably.

I'll even go a step further. You can't always tell halfway through the season which teams will be soft touches at the end of the season. In June/July we thought having 2 games against DC in our last 7 would be easy, and we did well to get 3 of 6 points. They were a different team after getting Mullins. And we were fortunate to play Seattle in June before they got Lodeiro. They were left for dead and, well, you know. Another example: Philly. They were presumed to be weak pre-season, proved everyone wrong for 3 months, then just when we started respecting them they fell apart.

Is it crazy to think our first eight matches are games we should win?
