2026 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

we can absolutely make a run at the Cup this year.
What a difference a week makes.

Here’s hoping the new striker lives up to the promise. And also that Magno shows his old form. And also that Hannes can keep on his new track (while switching to RW). And also Perea and/or Keaton and/or Alonso and/or Malachi can return and regain close to their old form. And also that we are pretty injury free in 2026.

I’m not saying this to be a downer (though I understand that may be the impact). Rather I want to continue to hold the team to a higher standard. I’m not convinced we are deep. I think we are plugging up holes. Fantastic! But what happens next is still a development project. It’s a much better development project than betting on a bunch of under 20’s. But we are still betting. mgarbowski called hoping for our previous squad to mature into a contender was like hoping to draw 2 cards for an inside straight. I think we are still trying to draw a straight. Though maybe now we only need 1 card to an open hand.

I would feel completely different if at least 2 of our 4 injured players were already back. But we have a lot of unknowns still.

That's fair! Parks is the big question mark for me. I'm not too worried about Perea, sounds like his injury was fairly straightforward. But if we can get Parks back and playing, I don't know how we find minutes for all our midfielders.

Tom Bogert confirmed this news and in his article mentioned that NYCFC also wants to get minutes for Seymour Reid this year, which I find interesting. Sounds like Sylla as the starting striker with Reid the bench/rotation option until Alonso comes back. And maybe Sylla moves to the wing when Alonso is back (or vise-versa!)

I'm excited for this season. A full season of Nico in addition to everything else, I'm really high on the team.

I wonder if there a world where this guy signs a 5 year contract and they use the GAM horde to get him under the dp threshold.

Anyways, a good in prime player signed before the season starts. How spoiled we are.
That’s what Miami would do - get him without being a DP. I fully expect CFG to spin him as a new DP for usz.

I guess I will put Yañez back in. I am assuming the reports about Fernandez are true, but I will add him with a question mark.

NYCFC 2026 DEPTH CHART
(italics represents a player who has not debuted for the first team)
Striker: Martinez*, Reid
Wing: Talles Magno, Wolf, Ojeda, Jones*, Yañez, Fernandez?
Wing/CAM: Nico F. M.
CAM: Maxi M., Maxi C.
CM: Parks, Perea, O'Neill, Shore, Arroyave, Flax
RB: Gray, Baiera
LB: O'Toole, Cavallo
CB: Martins, Gustavo, Tanasijević, Murray, Acito
GK: Freese, Romero, Ranjitsingh, Learned
* = injury

NYCFC DEPTH CHART - ARRIVALS & DEPARTURES
(strikethru = departure; bold = arrival)
Striker: Martinez, Reid
Wing: Talles Magno, Wolf, Ojeda, Jones*, Yañez, Fernandez?
Wing/CAM: Nico F. M.
CAM: Maxi M., Maxi C.
CM: Parks, Perea, O'Neill, Shore, Arroyave, Flax
RB: Gray, Baiera, Ilenič
LB: O'Toole, Cavallo
CB: Martins, Gustavo, Tanasijević, Murray, Acito, Amponsah
GK: Freese, Romero, Ranjitsingh, Learned, Rando
Thank you Gotham Gator for the previous version of this.

NYCFC DEPTH CHART - ARRIVALS IN BOLD (including assumed new arrivals this week)
(strikethru = departure; bold = arrival)
Striker: Sylla, Reid, Martinez
Wing: Talles Magno, Wolf, Ojeda, Jones*, Yañez, Fernandez?
Wing/CAM: Nico F. M.
CAM: Maxi M., Maxi C.
CM: Parks, Perea, O'Neill, Shore, Arroyave, Flax
RB: Gray, Baiera
LB: O'Toole, Cavallo
CB: Martins, Trewin, Gustavo, Tanasijević, Murray, Acito
GK: Freese, Romero, Ranjitsingh, Learned

So this gives us an 18 of:

Sylla
Magno - Nico - Hannes
O’Neill - Shore
KOT - Trewin - Martins - Gray
Freese

First off bench:

Reid
Ojeda, Maxi (either)
??? (injury recovery dependent)
Cavallo, Gustavo, Baiera
Romero

Keeping in mind those first off bench names are also the starters in case of injury or rotation. Our 6/8 roles can be met by moving Trewin into DMid to spell O’Neill or Shore and Gustavo coming into CB. But I think these spots on the field are still big question marks until we see Keaton and/or Perea back for real.

I think you’ll more likely see Gustavo starting at CB, Trewin at DM with Jonny coming off the bench. Gustavo had a nightmare against Miami but he was solid last year, he’s a Pascal guy, and with Keaton and Perea out/questionable early in the season, they are going to want to make use of Trewin there.

if everyone is fit and full form, having Maxi, Perea, the odd man out of Magno/Wolf/Sylla, and this Australian guy is a good start. The development of Reid, Jones, Shore and Baiera, maybe even Murray is the big swing for the depth of the team.

I watched about half of this before it was just repetitive.

What I liked is he seems to have better strength and passing skills than Alonso. He could improve our attack against a settled defense. As much as I love our guy 70% of his game is getting behind and shooting before someone catches up. The other 30 is dancing around them and shooting. Sylla seems more able to body up and hold defenders off and maybe is better at finding other open teammates.
Yes I watched 4 minutes of highlights to reach these conclusions.

Hopefully this signals the amendments to the blueprint with less project more prime and less waiting more winning. It has been a promising few days.
Teenagers are out, veteran in-prime players are
In. Refreshing.
We were saying it two years ago: we have plenty of kids around. We need some players in their prime. Now we're getting them: Nico, Raul, Trewin, Sylla.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

At that price and age, he’s gotta be a DP, right? So either Martins is being bought down to a max TAM deal in his option year or Talles is on his way out.

At first glance, I like the look of this guy. And I really like the shift away from loading up on youngsters to players in their prime.
How do bonuses and incentives get accounted for in budget charge?

Agree highlight reels are generally suspect. But there were skills I liked and hope to see. Most notably:
  • As you mentioned, he takes contact and muscles through
  • He reverses direction to lose his mark
  • He has a good head fake
  • Definitely seems to look for his teammates (though also seems to pass and pray at times when no one is in the space he passed to)
  • He reverses the field of play (though not sure that is super valuable if he is primarily playing striker)
  • He blows past defenders with the ball; it's not tricky, just a long touch with a burst of speed
OTOH, I was surprised this video lacked a solid sampling of his goals.

I hadn't seen him (Schalke 04 was already down in the Zweite Bundesliga by the time he joined them), but I think he'll do. He'll do quite nicely.
