Do we know if Matarrita and Wallace are around for this game? The release date for the World Cup was May 21, although MLS has the right to hold players until May 28.
The team posted that they would be with the team through this game, and Mata had also posted on his IG story yesterday about heading to Houston
I am in the camp that I would like to see Lewis making the 18 and getting garbage minutes in a game like the one vs Colorado, but is he really in the “doghouse” or is he not beating other players out for playing time? I don’t think there as been many times where Lewis should have clearly been playing over others. Maybe you can argue vs Wallace, but I think that’s Wallace offers a specific skill set that PV was looking for. He has made the 18 a few times this year.
I'm mostly with you. I think there were a couple of instances which he could have received more than garbage time, when Isi/Villa were out (I know these didn't overlap).
San Jose and Portland come to mind.
He’s not beating Tommy out. It’d be nice if our much-heralded manager could find a way to develop whatever he feels this very talented 20 year old needs to be doing differently and get him some game time. And if he isn’t making the 18 he needs to be playing on loan somewhere. Maybe they have plans to do this once we’re out of the cup.
Lewis and TMac should not necessarily be competing for the same spot on the bench. A bench will usually be made up of either 2D2M2F1GK for balance or will overload it with 2D1M3F1GK so that if trailing they have the ability to throw 3 Attacking players on. That said, I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen PV stack a bench with Offense in mind (3F), which is surprising considering the style of play he insists on. Recently, we’ve had at most 2F (Wallace & Shradi/Medina) and at worst only 1F (Wallace - against RB). It really makes no sense because any team won’t ever bring in more than 2 defenders, and we play so few midfielders, none of whom should ever be subbed save for being injured, that 1M should be plenty especially if our bench’s forwards are typically outside guys/wingers that can play wide midfield positions in a pinch. So why Vieira insists on activating 3M (TMac, Awuah, Ofori), who coincidentally are not gifted attackers, is not really logical because it limits tactics if/when trailing.

I know Wallace is a forward, but he's not necessarily an attacking option off the bench.

Well, this is a really lucky disparity we should take advantage of!
I think the reason we continue arguing about JLew and PV is because of last season, when he obviously saved our asses in LA and New England, and still didn't get his fair shake of chances to continue developing/showing what he has to offer. I remember after the New England game somebody posted a "all aboard the JLew hype train" post and got a gazillion likes. And then PV rerouted the train to Siberia and on the slow track, for unexplained reasons, while continuing to try to resolve our offensive weakness by playing TMac and Khiry Shelton. So we'll continue to puzzle over that even if this season, with Medina, Isi, Berget, etc. it really may make sense to bury JLew under permafrost.
He saved our asses against Chicago, in the heat, and down a man. The kid ran his ass off all match, got an assist on the 1st goal, and had 3 shots w/ 2 on goal.
Question: wouldn't a 3 ATB expose us against a team that lives for the long ball and pretty much bypasses the midfield. I mean, they've never had a good midfield and now they are short on competent DMs, so I do think we can have something like 75-80% possession away on this one, which is nuts, but still Elis can kill you with a couple long fast runs into space behind the backs of our wide wingbacks, and a 352 would seem to facilitate that. Or am I missing something?
I know Midas would say Sweat would be a wasted spot, and I kind of agree but maybe Tinny as LB and SAS as RB, just to have a wider back line and contain Elis better? I dunno.
Sorry, I didn't realize Mata is still available. So then Mata at LB, who is the only one who can somewhat match Elis in terms of pace?
I think the same, expect them to go with 4 at the back to counteract the speed and countering abilities of Houston, plus the huge field. If they go to 3 ATB, Houston will look to draw NYCFC in, push the wingbacks high and then push the ball into the space behind them with Elis and co.
Unfortunately 4 ATB probably means Sweat is in. I’m with Midas on that any formation that keeps him off the field is a good one.
