CCL - April 6 - Seattle (Away)

looking at the pic of lumen field posted on the club twitter and i'm noticing at least a handful and then some of advertisements that are surely not concacaf sponsors. so why is that allowed and yankee stadium ones aren't? i am baffled. we've theorized that the ads were the problem, but the ads at lumen field are there and visible to all who attend and any shots of the crowd will televise the ads placed above the lower bowl of seats. so... what gives?

As if Concacaf is consistent for anything. I think they just don’t want to have their games in a “baseball” stadium and don’t care if the alternative is an empty stadium. Wankers.

In the stadium, I see there are some clear banners covering some advertisers.

Seattle is really good. If we don't come back in Leg 2, no shame in losing to them. They're playing so well right now. And, frankly, we are not playing well at all so far this season. Defensively inept at times. Yes some of it is Martins, but other guys are just not good enough on that side of the field.

This isn't over -- not by a long shot. Hopefully we can get a good crowd at RBA next week despite the awful start time and the boys can get the job done.

Also that penalty ... the way the game was being called, that's never a foul. With a different ref? Sure. But not with this ref.

And was it a clear and obvious error? Kind of feels like the VAR just re-refereed the game. Don't like at all where VAR is going in this sport. Not everything needs to be looked at.

I just got home from work. From some of the comments I saw in chat the score line is reflective of how we played. We came into this one in poor MLS form and I was hoping our CL form would take over. On the bright side an away goal means 2-0 gets us through.

like i said in chat....not impossible but we need maxi and chanot back to have a chance. if not then have pereira start see if he can do something even for just one half.

seattle good. we were average. once again we gave up goals because we were asleep or ball watching. sloppy passes and bad touches all night resulting in turnovers. All I can think of is that we are just tired. Mentally and physically. For whatever reason, we just haven't recovered from all the travel and the international break just wasn't long enough.

we were slow with decisions, slow with pressing, slow attacking the ball and following runners. definitely seemed like fatigue to me and just not sharp from guys coming back into the game after being out with injuries.

we' also aren't as deep as we used to be. our starting 11 used to have a top 5 in the league at nearly every position. now, we're lucky to have 3 (taty, maxi, callens). and we aren't exactly bringing much magic off the bench anymore.

i also think the mismatching of our back line has really hurt us. just not in sync. can't really help it with the injuries and such but it's definitely a factor imho.

really hope the boys can come back and win 2-0 next week. we've had some crappy luck in league games with last minute goals or bad calls. but the rest of the time we've been giving up goals cause we weren't alert and focused.

I think that last part is especially true. We're not playing with a lot of snap, at least not yet. Lots of frustrated body language, guys throwing their hands up (especially Callens). That tells me something isn't translating from the training ground to the game pitch.

But I liked our second half tonight overall. I don't think Parks is all the way back -- he looks like a tree out there sometimes -- and we missed Maxi's judgment and leadership. The troubles at the back continue, although it was much better as the game progressed.

Martins finally had a good sequence and then another moment when he just ran Morris right out. So he might be starting to "get it." That will help.

I think seeing more of Pereira might help, too.

First Seattle goal was brilliant.

Second goal:

Penalty questionable based on contact official had established. It was contrary to the pattern established.

2021 Taty buries that chance.

There isn’t a team in the league we can’t beat 2-0 at home. Not sure it will happen, however.

Martins 1:1 is fine. It’s his awareness off the ball that lacks. That penalty doesn’t happen if he knows where his man is and establishes position to box him out rather than getting into a 50-50 or worse situation. Not gonna single him out of on the others but it’s clear over the last couple of games that he is not reading situations well and Callens’s anger is a tell.

callens was losing it with parks and malte tonight too. they were not doing their jobs. malte was horrendous on defense. completely asleep

Thought most of the problems defensively were disconnects between the back line and the two defensive mids. Both first goals were due to that IMO, with most of the blame on Alfredo Morales (and a little bit on Santi for the first one).

Really liked what Tayvon brought defensively though he had a few odd pass decisions going forward.

No question about it: Callens and Martin definitely aren't in sync yet. But I think Callens was pretty pissed at Malte a couple times, too.

In any event, situational awareness has been lacking all season. We're playing nervous -- ball-watching like crazy, on our back foot, reacting instead of attacking (and that means attacking on defense as well). Just not in a good place mentally as a squad. What we've seen from Martins so far is applicable to just about everybody, to be honest: getting caught out, losing track of marks, not advancing the ball quickly enough and with enough determination.

The good news is, in situations like this things tend to turn around in a hurry. We've all seen it before. All of a sudden instead of everything going bad and all the breaks going to the other guys, you start getting all the breaks and everything is moving in the right direction again. It all comes together in a flash.

I liked our second half today. Not great, but much much better. So let's see this tie out and see where we are.

Let's see some more Pereira too. I have the feeling he's the spark we need on the attack. Just that little bit of quality and pace and ... freshness. We just look a bit stale.
